Turbo nonsense

Featured Replies

The Mrs has just phoned from York and is stuck there because according to Skoda there the turbo has blown on her 105PD.

The management light was on and the engine was running in safe mode, so she went to see them. She slipped it round the corner and called the AA to get it recovered back to Dorset, AA man arrived with his computer said there were NO faults reported and the management light had gone out. She made him drive it and he said it wasn't right - BUT no faults showing, and no smoke out the back.

Any ideas?

Is it under warranty??

If so then have it recovered to a local dealer, get a hire car arranged by Skoda Assist and let them worry about it.

If it's not under warranty then I'd have it recovered back to you and go from there.

It is still under warranty, and Herself is waiting for the recovery truck to bring it back down south - she was only there for a couple of days with work.

I drove it at the weekend and it was as good as usual, no strange noises etc. and yet 300 miles later all sorts of strange behaviour......

A slight wander off topic, but what size wheels should my 53 plate vRS estate have on it? When I was looking for new tyres last month everybody seems to think it's got 17" wheels, but mine are only 16".

The estate versions of the vRS have 16" wheels.I believe 17" wheels were an option.

Thank you, Mystery solved. The 16" tyres were a lot cheaper than the 17s.

I just happened to be looking at the brochure and it says nothing about the 17" wheels being optional on the VRs estate. They should be standard as with the hatch.

Edit: just noticed it said 53 plate which would make it a Mk I VRs - this is the Octavia II forum hence the confusion!

My Bro had a TT with running problems. We checked it on Vagcom and found 4 faults (MAF and CAM sensor were 2 of them) and due to his warranty with AA, he called them out to check it over. AA plugged in their laptop and found no faults. I showed him vagcom and the faults that were showing, and he decided mine was more accurate and wrote out the warranty paperwork for the new bits.

If you have access to VAGcom, get it checked over.

I remember asking at the time......... the estate deffo had 16's. Something to do with the ride when the estate is fully loaded.

Further news.

I've just spoken to Loders Skoda in Yeovil. The Skoda assist works, the car has arrived, and we can have it back tomorrow - after they have fitted a new air mass meter.

Is it right and proper to name and shame the dealers who said it was a blown turbo?

Ordinarily I'd say possibly but it depends if they did a full check on it or it was a 'supposition' diagnosis. What I mean is if it was a quick 'oh it could be the turbo' without looking into it properly.

Glad to hear it's being sorted anyway.

..... only if they tried to charge you for it or get out of a warranty fix. Even Skoda mechanics are only human and prone to honest mistakes! (well, mostly human anyway:P )

VW TDI Air Mass sensors are well known problems in the trade, suprised the stealer didn't check that 1st as the turbo still works just never fully spins up, a blown turbo does nothing except generally fire oil into the pistons (never a good idea with diesel's as some have found to their cost).
