Miltek sport exhaust fitted to my Mk2 Octy vRS sounds less sporty than my std system!

Featured Replies

Today I had a Milltek cat back system fitted to my Octy Mk2 vRS..All went fine, old system removed no bother, new Milltek fitted great, all brackets in the right places no problems..Good build quality, nice heavy guage chrome tail pipes all nicely designed..

I excitedly started the engine when it was fitted and to my huge disapointment it sounded the same as the standard exhaust! in fact it could even sound less sporty than the standard system did !!!!!!!!!!!!

comments anyone ..

It may be a little quieter when cruising around but you get one come screaming past you and you'll know about it.

Miltek did revise the design after mine and Steve's were made (Not sure if anyone else got the early version) because of excessive booming when fitted in conjunction with the DP and CAT. Mine is only CAT back so I opted to keep mine as I liked the sound but with the promise from Miltek that they will swap it FOC if I ever wanted to.

Give it time to coke up a bit - it should get deeper. :)

i thought you were going for a pipewerx dual exit like mine? it's far better than the milltek and you get no gains from just a cat back. i love mine it roars when booting it but it's quiet on the motorway. the dual tips look sweet too. i'll have to sort some pics out

I know how you feel mate

In the past I have had various exhausts on cars, and its so disappointing when they are as quiet, or quieter than the standard :(

Maybe a custom exhaust would have been more suitable, so you could tailor it more to your requirements... but its done now, so just take comfort in the fact you have a quality modification to your motor, that looks great

Yep.

It's a brand new system, that needs to be "bedded in" so to speak. It'll improve after a couple of weeks...

Why would you want a loud exhaust at idle anyway - you just **** your neighbours off in the morning when you're de-icing the car....

I have one and agree with your initial thoughts however it DOES improve with time and I'm now delighted with the tone and 'rasp', just enough to make you smile but not too loud to drive you nuts!.

Is it at all conceivable that the Miltek, or any other aftermarket vRS exhaust, would fit a vRS TDI?

The OEM tail pipes are identical and they must take a similar route under the floor pan. Having looked at my TDI's system the join in the pipe from the manifold/cat to the main exhaust pipe (with centre and rear boxes) is about in line with the central door pillars. I have not found a vRS TFSI to compare with yet.

Anyone know? Perhaps comparing the part nos would tell us.

Miltek would be your best point of contact. They may even be looking for a demo vehicle.

Any chance you could check the part nos on your system? Maybe compare my car with yours; I'll give you the chassis/reg no if need be.

Different OEM part numbers.

Bo****ks! :( Well that's that then.

I'll have to see about calling Miltek.

Thanks for checking.

I'd imagine it would be pretty much the same for the TDI - you'd just need a different downpipe.

And somewhere for the DPF, or is that before the downpipe?...

Wouldn't have thought so. Probably wrog though... :D

The DPF is kinda in the downpipe on the 170.

That's about right having looked underneath mine.

What with the 'Cat' and DPF arrangement, I think a replacement exhaust for the vRS TDI would have to be 'cat back' from under the front seats.

I could just do a quick and cheap job of having the centre box taken out and replaced by a straight pipe; less back-pressure so quicker turbo spool and a bit more noise. ;) I wonder?

But the DPF is still there, and will just clog quicker leading to more regeneration cycles, increased fuel consumption and emissions.

Not sure why this is. Surely the fuel/air ratio will still be (nearly) the same.

As to regeneration cycles; I've done 9500 miles so far and have not had one regen cycle yet, not that I know of anyway i.e. no tell-tale light on the dash.

Yeah, I did consider but I decided against making the car look too 'non standard' and there was the issue of having to remove the rear tow bracket ...

Thanks..I'm feeling happier now.. I did wonder if it might given a bit more time..Actually I thought the standard system had become 'noisier' than when first new aswell.

Cheers
