How strong is the Fabia windscreen....

Featured Replies

....because it's Fabia 1 - Pigeon 0!

It's left a nice print on the glass though.

I'm not sure but I know the front bumper/grill area is quite hard as I hit a Pigeon at about 50 & the car came away with only a few feathers stuck on it, so Fabia 2 - Pigeon's 0. :-)

windscreens are normally very tough.. you could probably hit it with a hammer ans it still wouldn't crack

Wouldn't like to try it though.

I'd be concerned if the windscreen came off worse...

I thought I was the only one who had 'bird strikes':o

Yikes.

Never had a windscreen strike - mainly A-pillar.

Last one was in previous employers Transit Connect on the M25 at full pelt. Was thrown into path of lorry that struck it with it's grill. That made an almighty bang!!!!!!

Try it on a motor bike with the visor up! :(

thanks for that Val :(

At least you didn't cry fowl :D

Windscreens are meant to be incredibly tough, I the idea is although they will break because they are laminated they wont actually fall out or break right through.

Naturally this is where the problem lies when somebody isnt wearing a seatbelt, if the windscreen doesnt break the chances are they will be in pretty bad shape as the effect would be the same as you hitting a wall headfirst, there is not much give in a windscreen.

they will break because they are laminated

How old are you exactly?

I had a laminated windscreen shatter nearly 20 years ago and the repairman said that you didn't see it that often since most cars now had toughened glass instead.

20 years ago!!!!!

The windscreen makes up a substancial proportion of the cars strength especially if you roll it, it's something like 30 or 40%. You should never leave cracks or large dinks out of it as you never know when you will needit to be totally intact in an accident.

And when the laninated glass shatters it won't leave sharp edges on the small glass pieces.

Cannae be that strong......

No pigeons present, but I've got Autoglass coming out tomorrow to swap mine out as it has an inch long crack just at the bottom of the driver's side. Only noticed it yesterday, I have no recollection of any stones hitting it.

Bummer :thumbdwn:

They are somewhere in the region of that strength when intact.

I was on the way to work and had a stone wallop the screen so i'm off for a look later on to inspect the damage.

£60 gone I expect.

  • 3 weeks later...

Sparrow - Fabia = 0 - 1 :P

Thank god i had the window closed or the damn thing would have hit me on the head..

ps i know that this thread is not for driver windows, but it fits fine :)

Could be body flex / fault in glass has caused it :(

Once hit a large seagull with the windscreen of my honda civic now SWMBO's .

Honda 1 Seagull 0

SWMBO never forgave me for that after the shock wore off she hit me and said I was a murderer, what are women all about.

my fabia was the only car I've had where I didn't need to replace the windscreen, and it came into contact with many stones... (but no pigeons!, not without trying though ;) )
