Can anyone give advice on a good alloy wheel cleaner?

Bought my wife a used Furby recently, but the previous owner has let the brake dust build up on the alloy wheels. :thumbdwn:

A good clean are all the wheels need, or so I thought!! Despite blasting with a jetwash, using Halfords alloy wheel cleaner, and using white spirit with an old hard toothbrush, I can't shift some of the baked-on dust. It has accumulated in the most hard-to-reach corners of the spokes. The wheels are unmarked, apart from this problem, so I hope not to have to have them professionally blasted and re-laquered, if I can help it.

Anyone experienced a similar problem? If so, any recommendations on what cleaning method to use? Any suggestions gratefully received

Multiclean 2 is excellent stuff for cleaning alloys.

For really stubborn spots I found some stuff called Astonish in the kitchen - its now officially "missing" :naughty:

anyway it works well in small amounts and isnt abrasive.

A good wax afterwards and the wheels look showroom new!

Try "supagard" wheel cleaner and protector...some on e-bay @ about

Where can I buy some multiclean? It sounds like a much better alternative to this acid stuff I'm using?

There was a group buy organised recently for multiclean - maybe he can sort you out.

Take 'em off and use WonderWheels seems to work well, but I agree wholeheartedly with Tavia that getting some other poor sap to do it is a MUCH better idea.

Never tried WW (err, I mean wonder wheels) so cannot compare.

Anyone had both and care to comment ?

Wonder Wheels is good, but too harsh for my liking :thumbdwn:

MC2 (Multiclean) is as good but doesnt hurt the wheels

Wonder wheels - Good gear but a bit too harsh and relatively expensive. Also kills dolphins and fishes in the sea.

MC2 - Good gear and alot cheaper but needs a bit more work than WW (IMHO) but doesn't kill Dolphins nor fishes and smells like sweet oranges growing in an orange 'orchard'.

Astonish IS abrasive - look at the ingredients, the main one is some stuff called "silica flour" but having said that it's a very fine paste. I wouldn't use it too often though...

Chalk up another MC2 supporter. Get an old fabreze squirty bottle to put it in (rinse well first), squirt on wheels, massage the stubborn bits with a soft natural bristle brush (optional) then when you've done all four go over with your pressure washer. you'll be amazed - I was.

I've never tried MC2, but I have tried Wonder Wheels and don't recommend it. Too expensive, you use too much and it doesn't clean the well either. Try Comma's alloy wheel cleaner which is in a spray bottle so gets to difficult parts, and cleans much better if your looking for something to buy out of a shop.

Ok so i meant to say not too abrasive/harsh.. no harsh chemicals though

But you only need to use a very small amount anyway and literally a wipe over the stubborn marks gets rid of them. Works well on the sooty part of the vRS tailpipe too

Used to use Wonderwheels and swore by it but Multiclean gives amazing results, costs less per litre (although you have to buy 5 litres min), and makes my hands smell nice.

Bought some Wonder Wheels from Halfords yesterday, this stuff is amazing!!

After a bit of elbow grease, the wheels are spotless again. Doesn't half sting if you've got a cut hand, though :eek: :eek:

I put Swissol on after I cleaned them with Comma Wheel Cleaner (Good stuff). The brake dust just washes straight off

I have been using this for a couple of months and also recommend it ......

if you have any cuts or broken skin on your hands wear the rubber gloves

provided in the pack ........ it stings like hell :eek:

I go for MC2 (or Virasol! )
