Alternator? Fanbelt?

no idea if it's related, but I had a similar problem that was eventually traced (after 2 or 3 visits to the dealer) to a loose earth connection near the ECU.

Made my car behave very wierdly, including cutting out, loss of power, odd instrument behaviour etc.

Does the engine also cut out?

What car do you have?

Yes the enginee cuts revs at the same time. The car is a fabia 1.4 16v.

The skoda techs only tightened the battery bolts.

i think i have a similar problem, also fabia 1.4 16v, high speed cuts, usually 5th gear curising say 60mph brief complete cut in power then instant restart, presumably the car moving in gear restarts the engine, very dis concerting, happened twice in 5 months, any ideas ?

I had a similar problem to alastairb and tsamanis, which took me some time to trace.

An under-inflated tyre was being picked up by the ABS system and possibly due to a glitch in the softwsre, cutting the engine power for a fraction of a second!

The ABS system can detect a tyre that is 30% (9 PSI) under-inflated, due to the different rotational speed of the wheel. Why this was causing an engine cutout, I can only guess at this time.

I got my (slowly) puntured tyre repaired and I have had no problem since!

So check your tyre pressures and let me know if this fixes things.

I have an '03 reg Fabia 1.4 16V Comfort.

A classic sign of alien abduction is interference with vehicle electrical systems... any lost time you can't account for? :)

Seriously though - my 1.4 does a similar thing at times - it can't idle correctly. Engine revs drop and nearly stalls, then it catches itself and recovers... then dips... recovers...

Will have to ask my dealer to check it one day...

In trying to fix a similar power loss problem the dealer found that one piece of wre in the wiring loom had too high a resistance factor.

Only just got it back so I don't know if they've fixed it.

Skoda techie also told me a few weeks ago there is an earthing point between the gear stick and handbrake that should be checked for this one.

Could also be related to the Brake pedal sensor, as all VAG cars cut throttle when it detects the brake being pressed. i have heard of a few similar problems on the latest seat ibiza, same simptoms.

Right guys there are quite a few items that can cause these sorts of issues that will not usually bring any faults on diagnostic equiptment.

We are currently suffering quite a few similar problems with the A2 1.4(same engine).

Listed below are the items worth checking / replacing.

1. Checking & cleaning of throttle body - even if it looks fairly clean, the tolerence used between body and flap mean that even a small amount of deposit can cause the butterfly to not fully close - this really screws with the engine management as it starts seeing strange readings from various sensors.

2. Replacement of the Cam & Crank sensors - these sensors report the camshaft and crankshaft posistions and allow the engine management to make corrections the timing and fueling - again if these play up they can screw the software.

3. Check main wiring harness to engine ECU connector block - we have cases of connections being slightly oval which means very intermitant loss of signal, usually very brief but enough to screw the ECU.

4. If the Fabia has an oil sensor in the sump -- check the security of the connector block and the wiring to it.

Try not to mix fuels -- especially if using the cheaper fuels - there is nothing wrong with the fuel - but sometimes the additives used can mix and increase the chance of tar deposit build up.

Hope the above helps -- so far we have not had repeat problems with any A2 once the above have been carried out.

Could be the same thing but brake light switch? Another common VAG fault. Happened on my wife's Polo 1.4 16v. From 80 to 20 on the motorway more than once.

Since I started this thread I have encountered the problem unlimited times. There were some days that I used to visit skoda techs every 15-20mins. It might happen 3-4 times a days. It can stop for a while and start again in a manner that no one can predict. I have changed the fuel pump , fuel

filter , revs sensor , ecu , some other parts that I don't even know the terminology to write them here. I regularly inspect the tyre presure so I guess

it is not an under infalted tyre . Vag Scantool 1551 could not detect anything

VAS VAG tool did not detect anything as well. 1552 Scan tool last time gave an error on the ABS system so they took the decision to replace ABS control unit. If the problems is not resolved by the last change they told me that they are going to have a thorough inspection of the wirings as a last resort.

The good thing is that I now have lots of suggestions from this thread to check for. But guess what...I bought a new car so as to avoid having any problems....and I have this....I was wondering how can I make an official complaint to skoda customer care? Any Ideas? Is there any chance to have it replaced?

I sold this car sometime ago however just before I did one day I noticed the battery leads where loose, I can`t say for certain this was the fault but it would explain a great many things

I guess you should never overlook the obvious
