How do those with tuned Octys manage in getting the power down? Not a problem for 4x4 owners, but vRS's?

A Quaife is a better choice over an ATB or an LSD anyday.

Tyres are a good start to maximise grip rather than spinning them, however on a damp road Im not suprised, what do you run?

I'm interested in the answer to this question too as I use a peloquin ATB which is very similar (if not the same) to the quaife ATB....

ATB/LSD/Peloquin/Quaife - all the same kettle of fish in my opinion, using the same gear really. I also have a peloquin ready to refit in my car soon. Looking forward to some interesting roundabout action afterwards. :evil: The only reason I went peloquin is their apparent reputation to be more VAG oriented

Not had a chance to drive on these specific tyres yet, but I have driven on a few magazine tyre-test recommended tyres in the past and been thoroughly disappointed. Not sure why - maybe it's the fact they test them on a different car to mine, or because the drive differently to me, or because the "independent" tests are carried out at one of the tyre manufacturer's facilities?

Either way, I now tend to go with owner's recommendations over magazine tests and I've not made a bad choice yet, imvho

I would always be wary of magazine recommendations in tests. I have a friend who is employed by a well known mototr company. He is involved in testing of cars before they come to the market and also organises group tests for magazines too. One he had recently the car that won was already decided before the testing began (needless to say it was not the car his company manufactured). In fact the car that one the test actually failed to complete some of the tasks within the test (was a 4x4 test). Interestingly the said magazine had just signed a big adevertising deal with the car compay that actually won the test!!!

I have also found a similar problem with magazine reccommendations when looking for new speakers for the house. One set got great reviews but when listened too they wholely dissappointed (Speakers that did not do so well sounded far better).

So would definately say go with other owners recommendations and your own experiences/knowledge.

I'm sure an ATB is basically a LSD. But there is an ongoing myth, about how I'm incorrect.

A "Quaiffe" is ATB..

ATB and LSD are very different animals, ATB (Automatic Torque Biasing) is NOT "Limited Slip".

ATB relies on having a reasonable degree of grip on the unloaded driven wheel, if there is little grip it will still spin that wheel.. If you don't believe me jack up one wheel and put it in gear with the engine running, the lifted wheel will freely turn.

Depending how much preload a LSD has it will drive the car off the jack, it is able to drive the wheel with grip even if there is NO grip from the other wheel.

I have yet to find a fwd car that doesn't wheelspin at the first hint of provocation (i have been spoilt by 4wd for so long that you can launch visciously even in the wet ) without a fairly tight LSD, which isn't always very user friandly in everyday use. I'd be very happy to listen to hints on how to keep hold of my 210bhp in lower gears and less than ideal road conditions.

er, thats not right. an ATB is the same as the torsen diff that audi fit to their bigger 4WD cars. as you quite rightly pointed out its an automatic torque biasing differential that attempts to constantly keep the torque delivered to each side of the diff the same.

what you have described is an open diff.
