Getting the power down with a tuned Octy

Featured Replies

But dont Quaife do may diffs anyhow, both viscous, plate, ATB and LSD?

Anyhoo they are all designed to aid traction and put power down.

er, thats not right. an ATB is the same as the torsen diff that audi fit to their bigger 4WD cars. as you quite rightly pointed out its an automatic torque biasing differential that attempts to constantly keep the torque delivered to each side of the diff the same.

what you have described is an open diff.

what's not right?

I agree, ATB/Torsen same principle. The key to "attempt to constantly keep the torque delivered to each side of the diff the same." is that it has to maintain a degree of traction on both wheels to achieve that.

If you are referring to my statement about an unloaded (in the extreme example - off the ground) wheel spinning with an ATB, that is quite true - try it ;) I've used Quaiffe ATB's and plated LSD's in a variety of different cars and applications - road/rally/race, and that's exactly what they do. Indeed we have a problem currently with our race car which uses a Quaiffe ATB, and coming out of corners it struggle for grip due to the inside wheel going light (800 kg, fwd, 220bhp). Of course it's way better than an open diff but not as good as a plated LSD, which will have to go in soon. The disadvantage is it's much more viscious in operation, and will tug the steering around, OK in a race car but not ideal in a road car :)

Agreed plate diffs are pretty aggressive, assuming thats what Ford used in the Focus RS and why people moaned about them.

FRS comes with a Quaffe ATB as standard apparently.

To get drive, first you need a gearbox that works :)

Yip and a 5sp vw aint the best neither but what can we do

My Integra had an LSD and that wasn't a handful on the roads!?

Neither is my Octy with a Quaife diff. Despite 375 ftlb through front wheels, steering is not a struggle. Doesn't stop the wheels spinning though, so it is no quicker to 60 than a mildly tuned Octy - but that'll probably be the driver rather than the car!!

Quaife diff will be quite civilised on a road car, LSD behaviour depends on factors such as suspension geometry and how tight the preload is set on the diff.

always wondered why the FRS gets slated for it's diff. yet cars with much more torque, less progressive delivery and essentailly the same diff. are doted on :o

so if you spend 2k more on a diesel for stage 3 tuning as oppose to a remap and fmic you are nearly as quick, well worth it then

and why do 30-70 in 3rd when that car could do it in 2nd and do it much much faster?

erm, cos it was a real world comparison...

I was also surprised that the Allard Phase 3 barely made 200bhp which is what a lot of people on here claim to be on the doorstep of with just a remap and pikey mods.....

Chris

so in the real world you would have left it in third to overtake then?

no chance, you would have been in 2nd :D

sorry novice here;

How does the Quaife affect the driveability?

And how does it affect the wear and stress on other components?

Reason I ask, with this weather these days, 1st, 2nd and sometimes even 3rd gets the ASR going Christmassy. So i want to stop that and be sure I can rely on grip when I get myself in a messy situation.

Just slow down :)

Mine is all over the place atm, to the point where I did a huge 4 wheel drift the other night.........mental note to self stop caning it on roundabouts

Also worth looking at tyres too, imho!

Chris

yeah but the subject of this thread is 'Getting the power down with a tuned Octy'.

So not using the power seems excluded by the announcement.

Tires are an option.

Wot about a LSD or ATB, do they - although different- really make a difference?

main problem this time of year is it's FWD.. LSD or ATB may help, but one wheel spinning or both won't make much odds in practice. :( . The combination of cold temperatures and road salt/slime makes FWD and a healthy torque curve a bit of a handful. Not much will help unfortunately apart from not pushing the pedal so far so quickly.

Which is what I meant to say, but I kind shortened it

Really you got no hope this time of year, no soon as the torque kicks in its mayhem

I do take your point(s).

So if we drop the weather out of the equation;

what are the benefits of fitting LSD on an Octy? (in other words, does an LSD help putting the power down with a tuned Octy?)

and what stress does it put on other components?

Thanks
