2.0tdi or 2.5V6 tdi?? Comments please!

Featured Replies

I am about ready to change my '04 Superb Elegance 1.9tdi. I have been looking at other makes but cannot find anything that provides the same spec as the Superb for anywhere near the same money.

I am also thinking about having an automatic. The dilemma is, the latest 2.0tdi does not appear to be available with the auto box. It looks like my only option is the 2.5 V6 which comes with the auto as standard.

I would be grateful for any observations on either of the two cars.

Can't comment on the 2.5 but I have a 2.0 TDi before you make a choice take a look at the Superb 2.0 TDi DON'T BUY ONE thread on here, just in case you intend to do loads of short journeys etc.

Apart from that no real comments from me at this moment.

The 2.5 V6 engine is old technology and is not efficient - but it does produce masses of torque. This makes it good to drive but with a conventional auto gearbox it causes massive torque converter slip (which is why VAG developed the DSG).

So, you will end up with a car which is good to drive but which will give you petrol style fuel consumption unless your driving regimen is very favourable. The clue of course is in the comparative CO2 figures between manual and auto.

Pay your money and take your choice - fuel is not getting any cheaper.

How many miles a year are you going to be doing? i've got the 2.5 in 6spd manual form. I don't much like auto's, though to be honest with the amount of torque as previously stated, I hardly change gear. prob about 50% less changes than my octavia.

I get just over 40mpg avg, on ultimate bp.

Get the 2.5 if you want an auto, the 2.0 iiac is a pile, not because it is but because of smoggy compliance, I tested one with 3k on it and it was requesting attention on the maxidot.

got the 2.5 auto - nice car but i preferred my last 2.5 manual tbh = much better economy. however got to say auto is absolutely effortless and kick down very rapid. as you have stated you cannot get many better cars for toys per pound that can take 4 adults without any leg room problems

I cant comment on the 2.0TDI but have only heard of bad reports for it.

I had the 2.5 in manual form, and though the unit is a little dated it is econonmical, averaging 39mpg and very torquey. The V6 noise is very reassuring and moreish. My only grumble was the high price for road tax on it. £205 for a year seemed a lot to me, but what road tax isn't.

Bar that it was a fantastic car, and like you I had many if not more doubts about buying a 2.5

Hope all goes well

Paul:)

Having driven a 1.9 130 and also a V6, I would certainly have the V6. It maybe old technology but if your journeys are motorway cruising, it certainly is the engine to have.

2.5. Makes driving so easy and effortless. As my first diesel I also like the refinement. Floor it and you can't stop yourself smiling. :)

I've had my 2.5TDI Tip for just over a year now and have put 20k miles on. MPG varies 33 -43, depending on roads. I'm still a verry happy bunny. Total mileage is now 30k+

Only grumbles - instruments difficult to read without lights on, and 2nd > 3rd seems to be sloppy - almost a 2-stage change. I have queried this with Garlands, Aldershot who say that it is 'normal', but I'm not so sure. I don't want to get into an argument with Skoda if it goes bang just after the warranty runs out next March. Will chase after Xmas.

ericsuperbee - cannot notice any difference between any of gearchanges on my tip - accept my mileage is lower but should make no difference imho regards pugwash.

Thanks to all who have offered their thoughts on this subject. It is a difficult one and at the end of the day it is down to personal preference.

I will try to find a local dealer with a 2.5 to see how it drives compare to my current 1.9.

Whats the mileage on your 1.9 and does it have folding seats? I could possibly consider running two of these.

It's was first registered in July '04 and has just under 40,000 miles on it. It doesn't have the folding rear seats though.

Pity.
