Been reading about diesel engines and how they work, aparently some diesel engines no longer need glow plugs for starting (Clicky), they just advance or retard the igintion (By that I take it they mean the point at which the diesel gets sprayed in), so does the fabia have glow plugs ?

Yes the Fabia has glow plugs, they dont do much though.

I believe it needs to be below about 4 degrees before they even activate.

Well, I'd say yes it does.

A WV Passat sat here with the 130 PD engine has a glow plug light on dash when you turn ignition.

The guy in the article is a Journeyman Heavy Equipment tech, and talks about not Glow plugs in larger engines.....I suspect we're talking about thinks like Quarry Vehicles or Ships or something like 10 litre plus.....something like a VAG 1.9 will still have the good ol' G.P....

technically, a diesel without a plug is intersting but more to the point - does it matter? Apart from it maybe failing at some point?

I think one of the new Jap diesels doesnt have glow plugs....and if it isnt I have read of 1 new engine out there that doesnt for sure.
