Brain Storming

Featured Replies

Didn't know where to post this thread so decided to try it here!

I've been looking for a project for the past few months now and after going to Weston and seeing the mongral "in the flesh" I've decided that I'd like to have a similar sort of project to work on :)

I'm not after your crown as the people's champion Jason... was just in awe of the way the mongral left us all for dead on the drive to the cider farm :D

My Questions

Where can i get an old fabia (whatever engine size) for less than a grand... if at all possible

and most importantly.... in theory again... can a mk 1 octy vrs engine be transplanted into the fabia's engine bay?

If it all comes together I'm hoping to go for a kind of stripped out rally look with about 200ish BHP... or more depending on finances etc.

Just in the brainstorming stage at the moment... but helpful comments or downright "don't do it - save your money" comments are welcome :)

just plug a ntaional search into autotrader to see what the cheapest fabia is. You'll find felicias for £2K! so i don't know if the fab is down to a grand yet.

You'll be lucky to find a complete Fabia for under a grand, but if you're happy to do some work anyway, you might want to try scrappers and see what you can find. And yes, the 1.8T can be transplanted but you might need a fair amount of the donor car, depending on what you're starting with. ;)

Some of the big tuners offer this sort of conversion so may be able to let you know what is involved and give you a shopping list....

Chris

Why not start with an Ibiza 1.8T if thats the engine you want.

Anything is possible with the right £££.

doesn't have to be a runner... I only need a rolling chasis cos the engine will be replaced anyway... maybe even a crash job if the frame isn't too badly damaged (and provided nobody died in it)

Just trying to work on a budget :)

A very limited budget at the moment :P

for 1k it's got to be a salvage car which IMHO is your better option as post mods it'll be worth feck all. Consider a petrol model as it'll have the correct fuel system.

secondly you'll need to consider getting hold of the 1.8T engine, gearbox, ECU, probably driveshafts and as much wiring as possible from the doner so again a salvage car is a good option.

Also you'll need some decent re-maping.

You'll need deep pockets and determination to succeed.

I have determination at least ;)

And plenty of cable ties ;)

Chris

Sadly the deep pockets aren't an option!!

Easily 1k for a salvage Fabia, ditto the Octy (non vRS would be cheapest).

Custom fabricated engine mounts, some heavy weight wiring for sensors etc.

You'd need to set aside in excess of 8k IMHO. Jason wouldn't even want to begin to try to work out his current expenditure.

and many many spare hours and a swmbo who is understnading and wont cause a whinning noise from the house as well as the car ;)

So much for doing it on a budget :(

It'd be cheaper trying to rebuild a Fabia vRS from all sorts of parts :o

I reckon the money Jase has spent (or correction what the rrp is on the bits he has bought) would easily equal a nice audi RS ;)

Off on a complete 360 tangent here :o

With all the Fabia vRS parts floating around the web... if you managed to get hold of a standard diesel fabia... could you fit the 1.9 tdi PD130 unit from the vrs and all the trim etc without too many problems?

I mss my fabia a lot... can't afford to buy a new one though :(

Like I said... brainstorming ;)

Yep, it won't be cheap. £5k absolute minimum.

Its rarely better to mod a car than buy one pre-done. ;)

I miss my fabia vrs a lot... can't afford to buy a new one though :(

Like I said... MIND MAPPING ;)

I can remember the time, frustration and hard work Jase and his mates put in to build the car he has now ......and I would say it's probably cheaper to buy the finished article

Is that not copyrighted to Tony Buzan? :P

On topic, the last price I remember seeing on one of the SEAT sites for £6-7K for a 1.8T transplant into a mk2 gti/cupra  by the likes of someone like JBS

There's a bloke in Devon who's done just that. Can't think of his name, but he's on here a fair bit ;)

Chris

You've only got to have a look who's got the most posts on this forum to get an idea of the heartache and question asking that has gone on.

That has got to be the understatement of the year Stu ......I admire him for doing it but you have to ask why
