I'm sure there is a driving instructor on here that uses steel wheels on his VRS when teaching his pupils mate.

Ok cheers.

I do. I use them with winter tyres in the supposedly cold months. They serve the purpose but the car looks dowdy, if slightly mean being black with black wheels.

any piccies mate

Yeah show a pic please!

Im considering using it for Naviagtional rallies too, so they would be spot on, with a good tyre on them.

Cheers

I thought that the technical reason for alloy wheels is that they were lighter than the equivalent in steel therefore contributed less to the unsprung weight of the car so improved the handling - so it would seem a bit of a waste to have steel wheels for track work where I would expect that you would want your handling to be as good as it could be.

I dont want to knacker up my alloys.

Navigational rallies mean some muddy tracks, so thats the reason i want some.

I see your point but some alloys are heavy as hell nowadays!

I'd bet a steelie weighs less than the vRS alloy...

A alloy without a tyre on weight 9kg

They do seem lighter than an alloy (just had a weigh upstairs!)

Ill see what the pics look like first, than see if im gunna go down the steels or alloy route.

Steels tend to be much stronger than alloys too. I ditched the alloys on my Disco in favour of some steelies for this reason

I seriously doubt running steelies will ruin (or even change!) the handling of the car!

what tyre size are they?

not interested in buying them, i have a 15" set from my octavia and wondered if they would fit. could be an idea for winter.

16" to fit over the 312's. Same size as the oem alloys.

@youngsyd, no difference in handling at all mate.

You can get 4 steelies, with track tyres at work, for less than 250? go for it :)

The wheels i can get v cheap (i work at a dealer...), and the tyres i have in mind are some i have at home!

Dunlop Knobblies for forest rallies.

Need them for navigational rallies really...

Changes the look of the car, makes it look like a sleeper IMHO.

I did once wonder what it would be like to slap on steelies, with some appropriate plain trims, on a remapped VRS, swap the bumpers for standard ones, and see who you could surprise.

are your bumpers not standard?

You mean to make it look like say a 1.4 comfort trim?

That would be quite intresting, that is the thing if you slapped the steels on then you have the problem of people saying it looks like a vrs cos of the bulge in the rear bumper to accomdate the exhaust.

I doubt anyone who doesn't own one themselves would even notice...

True mate, very true, unless your clued up on your cars.
