Bulb replacement

Featured Replies

Whats the best way to get the headlight bulb on the drivers side out, I've had it apart but can't get enough on it to remove the bulb, does it twist out, and do I take the headlight out or the airbox? thx in advance

Ok, I sussed it, easiest way to change this bulb is to remove the plastic cover covering the airbox, undo the three screws on the landing panel holding the air intake tube, then pull it away from both the airbox and the landing panel, now for the crucial bit, undo the airbox retaining bolt from the side of the wing, unclip the headlamp weather cap, pull the airbox towards the engine a few inches and remove the lamp weather cap completely, twist the bulb out and replace, reverse to re-assemble, hth someone else who gets foxed by the procedure

Headlamp removal is the easiest way and doesn't take as long as you may think.....

Yea, but does this require the removal of front bumber 1st?

Indeed it does but this is not as difficult as you think.....approx 10 Torx Bolts to undo and then it just slides forward....you can then achieve this look.......LOL!!

Seems a bit extreme, well for the likes of me that has a 1 spanner Haynes rating, but I guess it is a good way to properly clean the bumper - admit that was the reason why you took it off!

It is a bit extreme but the Xenon lamps are supposed to be non servicable meaning that you have to take it to the dealers......figured I would see how easy it was to get the bumper off and it's simple.....easy to work with things out of the way.......

looks quite cool in a mad max sort of way!

It would look even better with a nice FMIC behind the bumper......

Ahh, I see, I wondered why you went the bumper off routine Simon, mines got H bulbs in it not the zenon's

Generally if you don't have small hands it's hard to change bulbs nowadays so pulling the bumper off isn't as dificult as most people think whether you have Xenon's or Halogen units.....

On the Passat you really need to whip the bumper off too.

The Superbs is easy to take the bumper off as the grille is attached to the bonnet. The Passats grille is on top ot the bumper, so you have to take that off too which involves removing the tab for the bonnet latch and thats a PITA to get back on...

I tried to do my sidelight bulbs without taking the bumper off, but alas it was impossible. :(

In my experience bulbs go at night and taking of the bumper at a petrol station will get you some odd looks

Another reason to buy a Superb mate.....even your new wheels will fit.....LOL!!!

I still think my way is the easiest tbh, it all hinges on the wing mount of the airbox, then there's plenty of room.

Landing panel? airbox, I only want to change the bulb that has gone in the drivers side headlamp....do you or anyone else out there have any pictures of this process, would help non mechanical novice enormously!

Is it possible to change a side light bulb in the Xenons without taking the car apart ??

Is it possible to change a side light bulb in the Xenons without taking the car apart ??

If you have very small hands and are patient then it is possible but I would seriously just take the front bumper off as it's so much easier and you will get a positive location with the bulb fitment.....

So it's possible to chance xenon-lights yourself, if they black out??

Here's :: XENONVALOT.COM :: CAR 6000K XENON HID CONVERSION KIT / XENON UPGRADE KIT :: EUROPE - EU some info about xenon lights, and there's a list where is mentioned only Octavia. Octavia xenon type is D2S. I wonder if that same type fits into Superb...?

If I understand your question correctly then if you have a Xenon Headlamp and your bulb goes then ideally you should get the dealer to replace it but it's simple to do if you remove the bumper.....

If your referring to fitting HID Retrofit into a Halogen Headlamp then you can ofcourse do this but it is not legal....

Sorry mate I just haven't got time to pull it all apart, but to help you I'll try to list it for you...

1 - Behind the headlight is a cover sitting on the air filter box it undoes by picking out the two blanks and then undo the two screws.

2 - You can now see the air filter box, where it is bolted to the inner wing, undo this nut.

3 - The air pipe that joins the air filter box to the front of the car, i.e plastic tubing is secured to the right of the headlamp by three screws, remove these and the air pipe just pulls out.

4 - You can now unclip the weather cover from the rear of the headlamp.

5 - Pull the air filter box over towards the engine a few inches, this gives you the room to undo the connector and twist the bulb out.

Work backwards for re-assembly, hth.

I followed Supurbia's guide last week and very helpful it was too. The dipped bulbs are slightly easier to get to but the bulbs don't twist out, they have a spring clip.

When you need to hold the air box out the way, I found the bottle top to the Disorano bottle was just the right size.

I recommend using the one from the re-cycling box rather than the drinks cabinet though.

All the time I was doing this, I kept thinking: I bet this is easier with the bumper off.......

LMAO.......you bet it is!!!

Yeah right up to the point when it needs refitting :D

You got that right.

Removing front bumper should be as easy as removing rear bumper...

I still have both xenon headlamps working, but that day will come when they "die".

In Finland we have to use headlights all the time while driving, so xenon (and other) lights wear out sooner than you guys in UK.

So when the times is to chance xenon headlamps, I'll do it myself and save lots of euros...
