The Bridgestone S-03s that I've just fitted are very quiet - still running them in though, so can't say much on their grip yet - but already felt some tramlining on a bad surface compared to the 205/55 R16s I had before.

:confused: NO no...225/45 .17 has the closest rolling circumfrence @1935mm....the 205/50.17 has an RC of 1945.......the 215 has 1910mm

According to The Wheel and Tyre Bible 215/45 17s are 1.81% smaller than 205/50 17s - so 70 MPH on the speedo (assuming it's accurate) would be 68.73 MPH on the road.

205/50 - 17 circumference = 2000.56 mm

215/45 - 17 circumference = 1964.44 mm

225/45 - 17 circumference = 1992.71mm

So yes, 225/45 is the best replacement and its chaeper than 205/50

225/45 is a direct replacement for the 205/50 ~ no surprise it's fitted to Leon Cupra / Golf MkIV etc which use the same gearbox / speedo drive etc as the Octy.

Bear in mind that tyres go from apprx 8mm tread (some are 8.5mm) down to approx 2mm when you chuck them, so over the life of the tyre you alter the gearing of your car by around 2%.

Fully worn:-

205/50/17 circumference = 1962 mm

225/45/17 circumference = 1954 mm

Moving to a tyre with a nominal 0.39% gearing change isn't therefore an issuie.

Some octy vRS's where shipped new with 225/45 x 17 . A few of our early members had this tyre size, think it was around early to mid 2002.
