Tyre advice Octy RS

Size...

I'm led to believe that 225/45/17s will go on the RS alloys ok - what are the advantages and disadvantages of this? I assume that you can just put the larger ones on the rear, and the standard ones on the front till they need to be replaced and have 225/45 all round. The 225/45 seem a little bit cheaper but nothing significant.

Brand ...

I was thinking of either going for Pirelli PZero Rosso (Assymetric or dircectional?), Yokahoma AVS Sport or Toyo Proxes T1S.

Most of my miles are motorway miles so I want ones that won't wear too quickly and aren't too noisy but still give good grip.

Thanks in advance.

Yes they will fit - slightly better selection available than the standard size. Should give slightly more dry grip, but prob not as good in the wet. Slightly more rolling resistance will mean less mpg and more tramlining.

How about noise levels and ride?

ride no noticable difference and the noise willd epend on brand.I have GSD3s and they are an immense improvement on the previous tyre, and i havent yet noticed any tramlining

P Zero Rosso Assymetrical.......much improved grip (I have yet to get understeer) dry and wet, quieter, dare I say a more comfortable ride.

You will get a drop in mpg....perhaps 3mpg on average.

So do you think it's worth swithching?

If you're on the Dunlop SP3000s...or wahtever they're called.....a most definate "Yes!".

IMHO. ;)

Not sure why Skoda went for the 205/50/17 when all the other VAG group cars use 225/45/17 (?).

I'd say "yes" to open up the choice you have. If doing 2 at a time, then yes....the only legal option is placing wider on the rear. You'll want to encourage your fronts to "die early" though 'cos your handling will be shot to mince. :)

I've recently gone from std 205/55/16's on my Leon to 225/50/16 (all round). Dry grip much improved. Wet grip hard to say ~ previous tyres were worn (duh!) so I'm not sure how folks make an easy before & after comparison. Seems pretty good in the wet, but in theory will be slightly less than the same tyre in 205/55/16.

Not noticed any increase in noise or fuel consumption, but my car does sniff out tramlines a little more than previously. Noticable but far from an annoying level.

They look much meatier, and as an added bonus offer much improved rim protetcion. This is important when your wife is a serial wheel re-shaper. :thumbdwn:

PZeros are universally slated by the Leon CupraR owners (standard fit on this car) Less money gets you GSD3's which seem to offer the best of everything. Toyo T1s similar performance, but faster wearing.

i went for the original size tyres so had to go for Bridgestone SO3's,very good tyre.

had them on my Corrado VR6,felt great on that.

expensive 120 quid plus vat a corner but well worth it.

205/55 16 91W (or more) P Zero Nero x4, nitrogen filled. How much?

What about 16" tyres. My RS (irish model) only has 16's and came with Dunlop Sp2000's. 205/55/16. Noisiest tyre I ever had. I expect to get another 5k out of them before changing and was wondering what I should go for. And would I have more choice if I went for 225/50/16's or should I stick with the 205/55's over the blasted Irish potholes being everywhere.

Thanks for the heads-up. Will probably be ordering 4 GSD3's (decided to go for all four at once) from mytyres.co.uk (

Had the F1 GSD3s fitted at the weekend and TBH am not that impressed.

Compared to the contisports they are much noisier and give a bone shaking ride on the roads round here. Not sure how much of this relates to the switch from 205/50 to 225/45 though. Fine on the motorway

MPG seems to have dropped as well
