Petrol protest again

Featured Replies

Just had an e-mail reminding me this is still running, should have an effect, time to push it again

See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it.

We are hitting £1 a litre in some areas now. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign that was going around last April or May!

The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol.

It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join in!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place not sellers.

With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.

If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!

Now, don't whimp out on me at this point... keep reading! and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers!

If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... .. THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take?

If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8days!!!

Acting together we can make a difference If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE

It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc. i.e.

boycott BP and Esso

Sounds like a good idea , anything to save a few pence

Better in my pocket than in the fat cats pocket

Agreed

Spread the word

In theory yes, but where do you think Sainsburys/Adsa/Tesco etc get their petrol from, they dont refine it themselves, they get it from the big refiners such as Esso/BP/Shell and anyone who will deal with them at a large discount due to their buying power.

Go into any of the distribution sites such as Langley or Buncefield (before the fire) and you see tankers in supermarket livery filling up with the named tankers.

How do I know, I used to deliver petrol.

I don't use Esso (Garage at the top of my road) or BP :D

I use Shell who have put the price up in the last 3 weeks by 4 PPL

It's a good idea but as with everything most people won't/can't be bothered and will just bend over and take it up the rear as normal

This won't work because retailers only make about 4 pence per litre profit. It isn't the retailers fault prices are so high it is the ludicrous taxation levels set by the government. Also a combination of oil level stock concerns and middle east tension are big contributors to the current high price. There is no chance of prices coming down signifcantly either because demand on oil is increasing rapidly whilst at the same time stocks are deminishing. I expect to see oil prices keep rising.

it's just another chain mail letter/email, but this time the common cause is petrol prices, and not a warning of a new virus, or whatever else gets sent around.

from what i got in info from the tanker driver that fills up the fuel tanks at work, he says most of the big companies get their fuel from the same depot, our fuel is from bp/shell/esso combination. The only difference is when it gets to the pumps and additives are added to the fuel. well thats what he's told me, just need another person in the know to confirm it.

We had all these questions recently on this forum about additives etc.

Additives are added at the refining stage, not at the distribution site, that would be like going back to the old days when we added a shot of UCL (anyone else old enough to remember Upper Cylinder Lubricant?) for every gallon when you filled up at the garage.

Oh, and at that time it was four gallons for one pound = 25p A GALLON.

Yes, I am that old.......................

Now sits back and waits for Des's comments.................LOL

Sorry to say it, but this really is just spam.

:iagree:

Hasn't this done the rounds already?

The only real way to save money on fuel is drive less!

:iagree:

Yep.

As there is only 4-5p a litre margin at the retail level (far more in manufacture) then even if the garages were to sell it at cost you'd see virtually no saving.

That's if this incredibly far fetched junk mail were to work at all....

local sainsburys was 98.9p a week ago, 99.9p wednesday 100.9p friday and 101.9p today, seems like if they keep this trend it be about 150.9p at xmas. however the three digit display at the bp garage shows unleaded and diesel at 02.9p and 05.9p, what a bargin ;)

I've seen that a lot and it has been tempting to fill up and ask for the displayed price.

in the sales of goods act it does say that if two different prices are shown that they have to charge you the cheapest of the two ;) must be worth a try

LOL, dont they have to do that?

I remember being at services, and they alerted all the pumps first, then main board, then once all displays up, changed the price at the till. Only too a few minutes to do, but many dont even notice or work out that it's wrong.

I have however, early in my driving career, found a pump which said I put 50 litres in a 35l tank!

An hour an a half later arguing, and showing the owners manual, the station manager FINALLY admitted there may be a calibration issue, and pulled the pump from service.

Which is another thing, how often are they calibrated? And how does Joe public know the pump's right?

But it must be what you'd expect as a reasonable price to pay. If it displayed 99.9 when it should've been 102.9, then fair enough, you pay 99.9. 01.9 is not correct clearly (though we wish).

The local council can measure any pump at any time on a forecourt. If you think a pump is not correct and the manager will not agree, give the council a ring. Used to get them a lot at my petrol station.

Common misconception. A shop is under no obligation to sell you a product at a lower price. Many do to avoid hassle, but it's the same with those TV's at Argos for £29.99 when it's meant to be £299.99, they don't need to do it, it's store discretion! However, it is an offence to deliberately mislead customers, but you'd find it hard to get trading standards interested on one incident, you'd need it to be happening all the time for it to stand- and the key is deliberately doing it.

the only sure way to reduce the oil price is to reduce demand. that would mean everyone on the planet who owns a car, motorbike, boat, plane etc stopping using it for at least a week. that just aint gonna happen so best get used to it!

Even if Gordon Brown was to buckle and reduce the tax on fuel he will only take it from somewhere else in your wallet.

(leaves desk and drives to local Safeway to fill up at 50p per litre!):D

Two issues:

1: Government taxation is over 70% on fuel - they are the thieves & fat-cats, not the companies producing the stuff.

2: A displayed price is an 'Offer to treat' and the contract is made at the till, at whatever price the till comes to, not when you pick the item off the shelves.

Did you fail GCSE maths?

Fuel tax is not over 70%

Of £1 a litre petrol , VAT is 14.9p and duty is 50.4p

As for them being thieves and fat cats , what do you think they do with the money? It pays for public services and doesn't just get taken home and kept under the settee.

We pay more in tax on fuel than many countries , but we are also taxed differently on other items.

This includes income tax where we pay less than much of europe.

Hmm three hundred million consumers in our nation of sixty million people :rubchin:

So the tax on 35p of fuel is approximately 65p. That's almost 200% taxation.

Tax is always quoted as a %age of pre-tax price in this country. Except on fuel where the gov't are so embarrassed about how much they take the p1$$ they fiddle the numbers. For a change. :finger:
