mpg on a 2 year old superb at 85mph?

Featured Replies

Hi

I am thinking of changing my Fabia VRS (fantastic car) for a 2/3 year old Superb as I have just started a new job which involves a daily round trip of 110 miles and I feel the need for a bit of luxury to make up for the long trip.

My Fabia does @51mpg with a steady 80mph on the motorway and a couple of miles town driving at either end. Can anyone with actual experience, rather than the official figures, tell me what to expect if I changed to a Superb. Also any tips on what model to go for would be appreciated.

Cheers

Steve.

I find my TDI 130 PD will return an indicated 49 to 50 mpg on a motorway cruise at the sort of speed your talking about. However, brisk acceleration around town, country and motorway overtaking will quickly diminish this figure - it's a heavy car to lug around.

With mixed driving I knocked up 575 miles on a brimed tank (60L) of Derv.

Run my 130 pd as a taxi and usually get between 550 and 600 on a tank. Thats a mix of town and motorway. Can sometimes go over 600.

Ben.

I have averaged 47mpg over 25,000 miles with my 130 tdi superb, I do about 80% motorways in rush hour and pedal it along fairly quickly where possible, my record was 60mpg on one journey, but as said above, around town it drops off fairly quickly, but you should still get 30-40.

PS the superb was built for motorway cruising and it shows

As for the model the 130bhp tdi is the best mix of performance and economy

If it's economy you're after, keep the VRS. M'way journeys in my mum's VRS are 70-75mpg; the same journey in my Superb is 50-55mpg.

My car's a 53-plate Superb 130 TDI with a 5 speed box.

Just did 52mpg on a 250 mile round trip with four adults on board in a 130 pd Superb.....I am very happy with that

At 80 ish mph, I tend to get 48/49mpg. :)

I normally average mid 40s just pootling about really doing short stop/start journeys.

Thanks guys, if I was getting 70mpg with the Fabia I would stick with it but the best I can manage at 75mph is 55mpg average.

Not sure whether to take the increased fuel consumption for the pleasure of driving a Superb. Is it worth the extra cost?

I would say it was worth it but then again I am not a 'small car' driver so would always prefer a car like a Superb to a Fabia, which begs the question, what do you like about the Fabia, because the things that people love about small cars, handling, ease of parking etc, they will not get out of a big car like a Superb. I own a Superb Elegance 130Tdi and over the 23k miles I have done, 48 mpg is the average and most of that is town driving! The Superb does make you drive a bit more slowly than a Fabia would simply because of the nature of the car. Have you found a particular model as I might be selling mine shortly.

The question you need to ask yourself is why do you want to change from your Fabia?

Size or economy?

If it's economy then the answer has already been given and likewise if it's size the answer has been given......

Like other Superb owners I get around 600 miles out of my 60L tank.....

Like other Superb owners I get around 600 miles out of my 60L tank.....

Me too - 110 miles 4x a week and then another 100 or so at weekends on urban.

I also get just below 50 mpg.

Do they still make the Octavia 110? (2 yrs old) as that could be a good compromise - more comfort and better mpg, i used to get 60 to 65mpg every week with my 110 TDi

The 110 is still pretty quick, whereas the 130 is a thirstier engine. My 130 Superb is smother but no quicker than my old 110 Octavia (don't forget the Superb is almost 1.5 tons!)

Seeing all these figures makes me quite envious........ I have a 2.5TDi / Tip Elegance that turns in around 35mpg on my daily 65 mile Reading - Guildford - Reading commute. This goes to 42 at a steady 80 on cruise control M-way driving. But I am very happy!!

Ia it worth it?

In a Fabia you drive along the motorway in a Superb you sit and watch it go past....yes it is that good

Hi mine is 2.5Tdi elegance. 20 miles a day half roads half motorway. Using the trip i can squeeze 32 using auto 27. But the v6 is a good engine, great for overtaking, gearbox a bit iffy between 2 and 3 then fine after that. Had it one month so still evaluating

Mines also a taxi, she's a 1.9 tdi automatic tip 130, I only fill it when it's empty and she normally gags between 340-370 miles which is an average of just under 30 mpg which I think considering it's moved up two car lengths and running in a congested city 80% of the week is very good returns.

I bought the car from a dealer 200 miles away, when I picked it up and drove it home she was indicating 45 mpg on the motorway, so I think the sort of use you will give it should see it return 50 mpg if it's manual.

Do it, get out of that shopping trolley at once and stretch ya legs.

2.5 TDI Auto. I get approx 47mpg @ 80mph on a motorway. Much lower in town, on hills etc

If it's economy you're after, keep the VRS. M'way journeys in my mum's VRS are 70-75mpg; the same journey in my Superb is 50-55mpg.

70-75MPG! Really?! I have a VRS and the most iv had on the trip comp is 71 and that was driving like a granny and coasting! How fast do you drive on the motorway to get them readings?

Thanks again everybody, I will pop along to the nearest dealer for a test drive and see if the Superb is as good as it sounds.

Have you found a particular model as I might be selling mine shortly.

I think yours will be out of my price range, I am looking at spending £8000 and I am down south in Surrey anyway.

I will let you know how I get on with the test drive.

Hi Dormouse, what brand of diesel do you use? I have been using a local Shell station and was getting the figures I quoted in my earlier post. Filled up with Tesco yesterday and now getting upper 40's on motorway and upper 30's on non motorway. Does anyone think different brands give different results?

Ive just got my 2.0 TDI manual and I've averaged 43 mpg over 2 days. I was expecting a little more. My BMW 5 series 3.0d got me 46mpg

Its a big heavy car....but it stands its ground even against the BMW and thats an extra 12K

The 2.0 has a DPF which reduces the mpg from the earlier 130 engines, its also noticably heavier on fuel when its a very cold day or in heavy rain. The DPF is located at the rear of the exhaust & has to run at a certain temp to maintain its operation, if the temp drops the car adds fuel to raise the temperature of the exhaust gases. Its a stupid system but gets around the euro 4 emissions. We find with ours the economy is noticably better on very long journeys, presumably its all to do with getting the engine/exhaust temp up

The Superb can give reosnable mpg, especially the 130 engine but it drops quite noticably if you start to push the car & on long journeys, Im guessing you push your car a bit to average only 51, I would expect a bit more from the Fabia & in the Superb you will I think struggle to achieve anything reosnable.

If you want comfort + economy I would suggest you try & find a Mk1 Octavia L&K with the 110 engine, this can easily be remapped to give you approaching 160 bhp if you still want a lot of grunt & will return mpg figures in excess of those you are getting at the moment. I struggle to get ours below 40 & 60 is achievable, interestingly it was better after the remap. Most L&K's being top of the range were privately owned so there are some good examples to be found

We have 3 Skodas, a 2002 110 L&K Estate (mapped), 2006 Superb 2.0 & 2002 Octy 4x4 (loads of mods =356 bhp).

The L&K is now on 125000 miles & still runs like a dream, you have all the toys + leather , Xenons, heated seats & mirrors, cruise control etc etc. The car is that good that when it was written off last year I bought it back & had it rebuilt.

If you go the Superb route make sure it is silly cheap as the market for them isnt good, we have a 2.0 Elegance 18 months old bought from new & we were offered 10,000 for it, older ones are even cheaper & with the new superb out shortly & the declining economy values are likely to take another hit, avoid the 2.0 like the plague, the DPF will come to haunt you & skodas attitude is "were not interested"

Hope this helps

Stuart

If you want the best mpg out of a Superb (especially the 2.5), it is important to realise the importance of conserving momentum. Actual speed is not an issue (at least at speeds up to about 80 mph; I don't know about higher). Remembering this, you can get a reasonable mpg at highish speeds out of the 2.5 with high levels of comfort and with very good acceleration available when you need it. What you won't get is the agility you can get with a smaller car and that BMWs etc seem to aim for.

So true!! my B2500 pickup truck (2.5TDI) easily achieves 40+ mpg on the motorway at 56mph using Shell extra whereas on Tesco diesel it struggles to achieve 38mpg. The highest mpg we achieved was on Shell at 48mpg, the lowest for exact same road conditions was 34mpg using Total. Despite the Total and Tesco fuels being cheaper, in our case the higher mpg with Shell meant it worked out cheaper per mile driven to use the more expensive fuel!!!

Friends and colleagues have had similar results in reverse, getting beter mpg with Tesco so it must depend on the engine and how it is driven but yes there are big differences, especially with heavy cars (my truck weighs in at 1850Kg)
