The Buxton special will soon be tearing up the Wakefield tarmac once again....woo hoo! :D

Is the lube thing just an "aside" or is it actually related to the thread topic?

Yer its high temp resistance greese for the input shaft of the gearbox, you cant just use normal greese apparently, as it wont withstand the high temps and melt off and contaiminate the clutch plate

if you'll read back towards the begining of the thread you will see that most people just use a bit of copper slip grease, or nothing at all. The copperslip stuff has a low melting point of about 175 ish degrees. A clutch can get temps of up to and over 400 degrees C. With the low melting point of the cooperslip stuff it eventually turns into a sludgey type paste and pics up all the **** etc etc and then you can sometimes get drag or judder due to the plate finding it difficult to slide on the input shaft.

The sachs stuff, and it is in every clutch kit that we seel is designed to withstand these high temps, has a dust resistance so it doesnt turn ****ty and the sachet that you get is the correct amount you need for instalation of a clutch. Your supposed to put it on the input shaft, put the plate on the shaft, taket the plate off, wipe off any excess and then put the plate and fit the clutch up.If you leave too much on then as soon as you start the engine, the centrefugal force will force it from the centre of the plate towards the outer edge of the plate ( towards the friction lining). If this happens and there is enough on the lining the clutch will slip from the off and it wont be long before you need another new clutch as you have just cooked the one you've installed. ;)

Hope that helps matey :D

It's OK - I was trying to slightly funny but that didn't really come across did it. :D I had read about it's intended use, but the way it randomly was mentioned made it look like perhaps it was for some other use

:rofl::rofl: Dirty bugger :thumbup:

I almost used K-Y to fit the cupra bushes - then went for washing up liquid which worked a treat...

If I had used the former - I would never have heard the end of it....

KY helps so many things slide in where they shouldn't go!

I mean like cupra bushes on a fabia

Did you use an axle stand / jack to keep the engine up on the gearbox side whilst the gearbox was out? Not sure how to manage that with my car on a 2 post lift. Might have to make a frame up to hang the engine off from above.

Yup, used an axel stand and a block of wood.

On a ramp thats what they would do, use an engine hoist bar. Basically abit of box section with a sling in the middle

Well ive finally managed it, shes back together and runs like a dream. the clutch feel is exellent.

The cupra bushes etc have really stiffened up the front

Not really pushed it yet as i am bedding the new clutch in, but will write a full report once ive had a proper go.

Many thanks to all the people who helped and a special thanks to spaniels Fr for the grease and guidence and to sarah @ awesome for arranging the speedy delivery of my clutch

Nothing like doing it yourself - enjoy the feeling of satisfaction - you worked hard to earn it.....

I wonder how much you saved (at UK prices)?

Cheers

Thanks basil, I worked it out to be a saving of around £500.

the best saving is got to be the brakes :D £80 for calipers, hangers, and green stuff pads. then £50 for some discs

Next project is going to be the turbo  Watch this space :D

cheers john

all fitted and finished then john?

the 312's make nearly as much difference as the arb:thumbup:
