DIY Clutch Fit + extras

Featured Replies

Evening all,

well my clutch decided to eat itself yesterday. So like a true DIY'r I decided to have a go myself. Hopefully following in the footsteps of the great Basil ;)

The car failed in traffic in Sheffield yesterday evening on my way home for uni. Quite a lot of smoke and the smell was horrendous. Any way a really nice chap from the RAC towed my little fabia home.

My Sach organic (no artificial additives or flavors) clutch and pressure plate arrived yesterday, thanks to Sarah @ Awesome Gti  . I also acquired a brand new DMF and a big box of other goodies from mike at eurocarparts. :D

Got the fabia in the garage tonight and made a start stripping off bits to gain access to the gearbox.

I wont go into every detail but here are some pics to start with.

The whole of the undertray was filled with material from the clutch.

  • sorry matey, was tired last night  probably why i missed the joke in there

I only wish I knew where to get a left hand screwdriver from then I could tackle a job like that

Well done mate, keep us updated re prices and pics and how difficult it is for my brother

Bloody hell matey, seems like the clutch was finished. Coincedently i work for sachs in the warranty department and i test all the warranty claims that come back in the aftermarket side of the company ;)

At a guess with the state of the lining that had come off the plate id say that the clutch had been slipping for quite a while?

Quick note for you though....... DO NOT USE COPPERSLIP ON THE INPUT SHAFT OF THE GEARBOX when you put the new race clutch in..... If you put too much of it on then it will centrefuge out onto the nice new lining of the new plate and guess what will happen within a few weeks ;) you'll be forking out for a whole new replacement. Also only use the sachs grease, as it is a specially formulated grease that is designed to work in high operating temperatures.

Also make sure that the cover and the gearbox are all nicely lined up when putting the box back on, make sure the concentric bearing is all fitted ok too.

As for bedding the clutch in, take it easy for 500 miles..... i had one in my old ibiza fr tdi which had an allard vt2 hybrid turbo on it and it never slipped once......

If you have any problems either pm me or put them up on here and ill try to help matey... :D

Cheers

Yup its been slipping for a while, it think it was high heat caused by the slippage that did this one in. The lining has defo come away from its backing, i know this as its all over the place and it stinks

Will do, if i get any problems

Where is the sach grease available from? I didnt get anything in the boxs

Its going to need a right good clean up before i attempt the rebuild. Oil from the knackered DMF is everywhere too :(.

cheers mate

Update, Just spend 20 mins working the car.

Both drive shafts are off, both bottom arms are off and awaiting powerflex bushes to press into them.

O and i drained the gear oil off. Not much really.

Told you mate.......cahunas....big cahunas. :D

Great stuff matey - looks like all is well in hand, power to you!

When it's all together and running well, you'll get a great feeling of achievment, that simply dropping it off at a garage can't buy....

I asked Ross about the need to lube the spline shaft as the proper stuff is harder to come by than hen's teeth out here. Closest I could find was BMW motorbike spline lube.

Ross said that he puts them on dry - avoiding the problem of excessive grease in the first place...

Keep the pics coming!

Cheers

Keeping my eye on this one. ;)

Doing the same thing soon, only I'll have the relative luxury of a 2 post lift and something I lack... "skill" - courtesy of a mechanic mate. I'll probably watch, point and go "wossat", and make cups of coffee/surf briskoda from their office....

I am also very thankful that although my clutch slipped like aboslute F*** on the drag strip, it's actually still VERY good indeed on normal driving so I've not lost my car and been forced into a clutch swap, unlike yourself. :)

we call that bundle of clutch remains a "birds nest" seen plenty of Fords with that in the bellhousing , especially motobility cars for some reason

i wouldn't go blowing the bellhousing out as was suggested , it might not be asbestos these days , but i wouldn't say it would be any good for you if you breathe it in , best just tipping the gearbox up and brushing out

i've used a smear of copper slip on the input shaft of every clutch i've done without any problems, it stops the plate chattering on the shaft and fretting the splines

Holy s***e, the floor of your garage is TILED or have you just got an enormous kitchen.

Huge undertaking, fair play to you, you are braver than me (probably a lot smarter as well, not having to trust Dell-boy the dodgy dealer and pay the ludicrous labour-charges)

Slowly progressing

Yer I totally agree. Much more rewarding, plus i know its going to be done how I want it done, like powder coated subframe and bottom arms. which wouldnt get done at a garage.

Not sure myself on the greasing bit, I think when i did the paddle clutch on the golf i left the shaft dry and that was fine. Might do the same again :)

Correct  had to break off now though, stupid university work

Good to see a nice range of hitting implements in the work area - Keep up the good work.

They are the two i most favour, the small hammer for tapping things and the big rubber one for really hitting stuff with  Did you know they were the only two items of said toolbox I used to take off the front bumper

We have a two poster down at the warehouse. Couldnt be bothered doing it down there, would much rather work at home, with a fresh supply of bacon buttys and beer
