petrol and diesel price, is it actually expensive!?

Featured Replies

it's a problem which I continually look at

it costs me less to go to work in my car, than to go on a train. it's also quicker.

that's all there is to it, really :)

How are the pumps served? I always assumed they had 3 underground tanks, one for diesel, one for unleaded and one for super so shutting off pumps doesn't actually prevent all the fuel being bought up? Probably wrong

Chris

Depends what garage/supermarket ect.

The garage I work at has 7 pumps and 4 underground tanks.

1+2 = Offer Petrol and Derv

3+4 = Petrol and Super

5+6 = Petrol and Derv

7 = Derv

The pumps work like this - The person on shift needs to actually start the pump each time for every different person. This is to so say stop drive offs.

- There is fuel left in each pump but very small ammounts. There is limited access from the pumps to the tanks as there is a re-inforced cut-off valve this also has a seal then over the top which the staff don't even have access to.

I hope this helps.

Nah, the country as a whole would just get into more and more debt. Personally, I'd be asking for a pay rise to compensate or to work from home more and saving me 50 litres of diesel a week :D

Chris

I know teachers get a payrise everytime if the fuel goes up.:(so why cant the rest of our wages go up?

:eek::eek::eek:

AFAIK UK teachers got a 2.5 per cent pay increase in 2006 and a similar rise in 2007. So if their payrise should correspond with fuel price and the price today is 100 p/litre the price has risen (moderately) from 95p since the beginning of 2006? Surely not.

No doubt there are lots of people who haven't got an annual payrise of 2.5 per cent, but there are probably lots who have got much more.

Didn't realise that. The ones I knew get a cost-of-living pay rise each year but also got a priority card during the fuel protests :D

I seem to recall (old git that I am ) when petrol went up to over 50p a gallon (Red Govt. again) which is about 11p a litre and now it is roughly 9 times more expensive (4.45l in a gallon) than 30 years ago.

The RPI has risen by roughly the same amount! It was 225 then & 2000 now (compared to a fictional 1950 or something when it was 100).

The Govt. takes about 50% in direct taxes, the rest is VAT. The vast majority of the remaining 35% goes to the "Owners" and they refine & transport it etc. All of that infrastructure has been paid for many times over.

The reasons hydrocarbon based commodity (oil, plastics etc.) prices have stayed high (and will probably rise relatively) is the fear of "Peak Oil" which is when more oil is being pumped than is discovered or brought on stream per annum, thus reducing perceived available stocks. This actually happened in 2005, but not by much (imagine trying to fill a bath slower than it empties).

The US Govt. has put something like a billion barrels on hold as a "strategic Reserve" against future disruptions of supply and 30% of it's known reserves are on hold for the same reason. They're also "obliged" to supply Israel with oil for 5 years in the case of an emergency.

As we all know, a lot of politics is played over oil and the latest is the greenhouse effect & global warming. We are being taxed for a natural event. Global climate has ALWAYS fluctuated - what were the ice-ages & how did dinosaurs live in Antarctica?

Oil = money and as long as we use it, someone will make a profit from us.

I find some of the info from the AA link above interesting: Both we & Norway have North Sea Oil, the Dutch Govt, owns Shell Oil, yet we're amongst the most expensive countries for petrol prices...

well said that man ^ :)

I can remember when it was less than that( about less than 6 bob=30p/gal) ( older git), but in those days I had a mini --to fill tank cost about 30bob(£1.50).To fill Furby tank is about £45 .

Lets now look at wages then and now .

So overall fuel is now not expensive but **************************expensive thanks to the constant need of this shower of idiots in charge of the country to **** things up.

I won't get started on how they waste money by trying to do things on the cheap( their road safety policy),and up costing more money or just not getting the job done properly ( take Plastic policemen for an example)

I know my pay at the time (1977) is difficult to compare as I was a Squaddie (REME) and my top line of £50 a week (£2600 p/a) relatively low for a skilled mechanic and 50% was deducted for tax & housing etc. (Yes, £25 a week!). I think I cleared £55 or £60 in 1978 (which was after the economic crash) in a main dealership. 9x25=225 9x55=495! (I'll have to check the RPI for 1978).

Mechanics now earn £18 - 25k or more and that clears £230 - £300+ p/w. (going on a 33% overall tax burden). A craftsman of my rank today only gets £16.5k & total deductions are still roughly 50% (a 6.5 times overall increase - Army pay always sucked). A skilled diesel fitter/HGV mechanic can easily crack £30k - £380+ p/w net.

BUTTtttt there are lies, damned lies and statistics ;)

(And it doesn't really matter which political party is in power, they're all owned by the same money).

im only using the car for travelling to and from work and over to pick/drop my daughter off. gone are the weekend drive outs (apart from the brisky ones).

Unless there was a really sharp rise in running costs (not just petrol) I won't give my car up yet.

I don't use it unnecessarily now anyway.

Even better is it matches the 42mpg of my mates newer Corolla diesel.

I live in rural Lincolnshire so public transport is not an option, wages are very poor and made even worse by all the migrant labour here who will work for naf all. I can not move anywhere else because of the ridiculous house prices in well paid areas of the country. Diesel is currently £1.10 a gallon here and rising, I have to have a car for work their is no other option. Ok I could use a bike but my life expectancy would be very short as the road network here has got to be just about the worst in the country, we have 44 tonne artics using country lanes as short cuts because there are no decent dual carriageways or motorways. Due to the increasing cost of fuel and general cost of living, I have had to give up my motorsport hobbies (autograss and banger racing), I have a classic car which is now parked up and goes nowhere. We usually have 2 holidays a year (in the UK, never been abroad) but very likely wont be going at all next year. So basicly I have no quality of life anymore, All I do is work to pay the bills and tax to the government! Well done Mr Blair and chums for screwing up the country:mad:

"Public" transport is no longer public, it's all privately owned!:mad::mad: (And worse!)

With annoying ch@vs blaring out their crap music over their mobile phone's poor quality speaker and generally annoying people.

Which is why I use a pushbike (even though it's decrepit ) whilst the Gnome is "resting"

Well its only going one way now. Lowering interest rates lowers the strength of the pound so prices shold go up. And with all those petro-dollars becoming more and more worthless the price of crude looks like it'll keep going up too. How bad will things get before we get oil delfation?
