Xenon Headlights

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

First post I have placed on here in months!!

I am looking to have an aftermarket Xenon Headlight set fitted to my VRS.

Any idea how much this costs?

Where can it be done?

Are they any good?

Look forward to hearing your views

Much apreciated

:)

Hi , I have them fitted to my VRS and they look amazing.

Its a bit of a tight squeeze behind the lights but I changed a bulb the other day so its not to hard to do.

Best of luck..

Wasnt there some rumour that they dont spread the beam properly unless you have the proper reflector headlights. I also heard you could fail the MOT with them but wasnt sure whether that was just hearsay either. Itd be nice to get other opinions on this.

Cheers guys!

Was hoping for some more views on this?

Thanks

Hii . Just read that last post and thought " I do get flashed alot at night" so pulled the car onto the Mot ramp and they are all ok. Not sure of the make, and to be honest not sure if the headlamps are different to another Fabia but if you want some pics I will be more than willing to send you some off my phone.

hope this helps. karl..

Karl,

Would love to see some photos, can you post them on this thred?

Will take the photos now and try to put them on tonight mate..

the problem is, that proper Xenons have projector headlights, whereas normal headlight are relfector.

you are getting flashed because of the light spill going everywhere

Rather than just these kits you buy can you not get the whole unit and have it fitted?

If you buy these kits are they easy to fit?

I was looking for a whole unit with xenons in like you would get if you had them as an option when buying from new?

More views owuld be good and some pictures!

Cheers

you can, but the light units retail about £500. each.

then you've got to put on the ballasts, headlight washers, and self levelling system and sensors.

Ouch!

Is it really that expensive?

They were £800 I think as an option from new!

I must have had the lights changed then due to the beam is perfect on the MOT beam tester at work

Saying that, the car has headlamp washers and the beam adjusts when switching to "high beam" so I must presume it is a propper kit...

do yo have any pics of it?

I'd second, third and fourth that comment. I have Xenons (factory fit) on my Passat and they are great. My wife's Polo 9N would really benefit from Xenons but it is not going to happen > Xenons without projector lens are just not useful - they do not legally exist in the real world. Might be just as handy to get some "nice" Starky and Hutch side stripes, remember not everything that you can buy to fit to your car is legal or useful.

Although the latest breed of uprated halogen lamps could be fitted to her car and are as good as xenons imho :D

Yup, that's the route I took with the Polo, the great pity is that VW "showed" the 9N Polo prior to launch with Xenons fitted - and in mainland Europe included them as an option - but it just did not happen - maybe no demand, or it was too expensive as a factory fit option.

If it helps, I fitted an aftermarket H4 to my motorbike.

Yes it's brighter than a bright thing on a bright day in bright town, but the scatter's a real problem.

On empty B-roads it's fine, but on busy A-roads and Motorways it's a pain.

At least the kit was only £30 inc P&P from China, so it would be a great loss of i give in to common sense and convert back.

Proper Xenons are brilliant, they will be much better than upgraded halogens.

I came from a VRS with factory fit Xenons which I found exccelent to a Roomster with halogen projectors and the difference was massive so i bought some Phillips Extremes which are a vast improvement on OE bulbs but still not as good as the Xenons which I miss sorely. I would have bought an upgrade kit except technically fitting these to any car as an aftermarket car makes your lights illegal.

From the DOT website;

"In the Department's view it is not legal to sell or use after market HID lighting kits, for converting conventional Halogen headlamps to HID Xenon. If a customer wants to convert his vehicle to Xenon HID he must purchase completely new Xenon HID headlamps. The reason for this is that the existing lens and reflector are designed around a Halogen filament bulb, working to very precise tolerances. If one places a HID "burner" (bulb) in the headlamp, the beam pattern will not be correct, there will be glare in some places and not enough light in other places within the beam pattern..."

Full article to be found here. It's not just as simple as "getting the pattern right". It would be great if you could just change but the reality is never that simple. Some people will say "I have had my MOT and it passed fine". All I will say is it's down to you. Search to find the many debates on this.
