Standard Fabia Headlights

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm on my third fabia (as stated in my other thread it's my first VRS however).

With all three I've noticed the the headlights are very, very good. Has anyone else (with standard, not modified, headlights) had the problem of people thinking you're on full beam when you are in fact on dipped beam? I've had to resort to adjusting the height of the beams using the little switch by the light switches to prevent people from constantly flashing me..

On all three cars I've had the headlights checked by my father and they're within the legal limits, by the way...

Is it just that VW group cars have good light reflectors?

Yup you're right. they are very good. I got flashed also with the standard bulbs.

I have just put in some Philips Extremes +80% dips and also some 130w rallye main beam bulbs (for off road use of course  )and they are now fantastic. I do have to use the adjusters to put them right down or i get flashed all the time.

All this talk of Xenon conversions - IMHO I really don't think there is any point.

Thats just my view though :)

I've been flashed too, especially 4-up if you don't adjust the level control to compensate. The standard Fabia lamps do seem pretty good to me.

When my fabia was in the bodyshop, my hire car was a passat, which had Xenons... TBH I didnt like them. They were too direct, if that makes any sense...

With the halogens though, the light scatter lights up more of the road IMO :)

I wonder if it's because the Fabia lights are quite high up and there's a lot of plastic there. I did get flashed a couple of times, but I think my alignment was out. I ran with Silverstars and Rallye main beams and the output was excellent. Having been out in a car with xenons I don't really see what the fuss is about compared to uprated halogen bulbs. I imagine where the xenons come into their own is on main beam where the beam is not restricted.

So it's not just me that thought these were awesome when I first got my fubry (that said.. I went from a 1992 Escort L)

anyways.. I've gotten flashed a couple times for no reason and can only assume it's cuz they think I'm on full beam.. I did for a short while think my lights were mounted directed up a little to much, but one day waiting at lights on a dual carriage way (A40) another furby pulled up next to be behind a white van and I noticed they had exactly the same lines/patterns coming from there lights onto the van as I normally would..

So, yeah.. lol, Furby lights seem to shine quite high with in the legal requirements.

p.s. does anyone else have the lil thing of flicking the full beam to flash someone through and it twanging into the locked on position? maybe i just flash to quickly.. oh, and a side line.. if you've got your lights on and you flash.. do you find people don't notice because the normal beam is so bright anyways?.. again, maybe i just flash to fast.

Interesting comments, because had the same thing when had the car from new, and had the occasional flash of headlights.

Have factory fit xenons and not that inpressed tbh. Dip beam is bright but sharp cutoff and main beam is so narrow its never shining where you are driving. Fiesta lights were better

Am I right in thinking the main beam is additonal spot only and Xenons do not alter as that how it appears

Yep main beam is a separate halogen bulb. I ran Philips 100W Rallye bulbs in my mains and the improvement was amazing :D

Chris

I'm glad it's not just me. Thought I may have been missing something with the whole Xenon thing but seems they are not really necessary.

I'm very happy with the set up I have on my car now and will be sticking with it. I also have the front fog lights wired up to come on with the main beam (like driving lights). Doesn't really do much except light the road a bit better right in front of you.

Thinking of maybe getting some small spot lights to put by the lower grill.

Think I have a bit of a light 'fettish'?!! :o:rolleyes:

Sounds like something to investigate, thanks, it niggles me everytime I flick the main beam switch

i get flashed all the bloody time, i just enjoy flashing back and thinking to myself i wonder if the driver who flashed is now thinking to themselves, god im a pillock!

So someone lets you know that you're blinding them so you flash them back and blind them even more? Sounds sensible

Maybe it's worth doing what the OP does and adjusting the beam down a bit to stop people flashing you? ;)

Chris

erm no, i care more about where im going than people over reacting and flashing me, im doing nothing wrong as i have my dipped headlights on, they shouldnt over-react

So people are flashing you for no reason? They're flashing you because you're blinding them!!! Still, as long as you're alright that's fine then....

Chris

i am not blinding them, i have my dipped beams on, they are just overreacting muppets, fair enough it bugs me if a car keeps its full beams on but not to the extent where i cant drive, i have my dipped headlights on, theres no way that they can possibly 'blind' another road user

You try doing that to a lorry or a car fitted with 100/130w main beams or Xenon Main beams. You won't be able to see feck all when they flash you back properly!

I drive plenty of miles and see so many cars with badly adjusted dipped beam it isn't even funny.

If somebody is flashing you they can't fecking see or think you have you lights on full beam. What does it hurt to get them checked out? I mean you have lowered your car and altered the suspension set up, as such the lights may well be out now.

As for dipped beam, there is plenty of way! If they are out of alignment or the car is heavily loaded then they will blind other rad users until the cows come home, or you get it fixed.

/\ car isnt lowered as of yet, eibachs are in my shed.

Car also passed MOT last month and to pass they do a beam test, so my Fabia is designed and engineered how Skoda deemed safe and the law will agree with that.

i dont get flashed all the time only occassionally, 4-5 times in 2 months and i drive every night.

My friend has a polo gti with factory fitted Xenon lights and he gets flashed quite a bit probally because they change colour at different angles like xenon's do.

im not going to adjust my headlights from standard so that there pointing blank down at the road as i will probally turn off onto a B road and not be able to see a bloddy thing

Bearing in mind I was driving a car where a small child had put the beam adjuster down to 3 and I could still see well enough, I can't see you turning off onto a B road and not being able to see anything. In the case of yourself and your mate I don't see that it would hurt to have it checked that it is still within spec.

I have a car with uprated bulbs in the headlights and never get flashed.

Hope you don't come across a mini with a lighting bar and 6 cibie oscars fitted to it.

But, you started out by saying:

i get flashed all the bloody time

which is a bit different to I've been flashed 4-5 times in 2 months

Chris

I drive every morn and eve in the dark at this time of year and I do get "flashed" now and again (although not as much as in my old CooperS with Xenons). You just have to adjust the lights to the optimum setting giving you good vision whilst not dazzling oncoming cars. I agree some people overreact though, you do need to see where you're going after all.

But a properly adjusted set of front lights on dipped beam wont cause any dazzling as the top of the beam is cut off and the beam pattern set for that very reason.

I get flashed a fair bit.... to stop it I lowered the angle of beam but now it doesn't seem to give much illumination of the road ahead!

Another thing worth doing is to make sure the headlight glass is clean. Dirt and bugs can cause a surprising amount of scatter on some lights.
