Engine/Transmission Noises

Featured Replies

I've not had the Octy long so am still getting used to the various

characteristic noises. Not sure if this one is normal or not though...

The car is very quiet when first driving at low speeds but then

there's this sort of whine once its been driven faster for a bit. It

sounds different on acceleration than it does on the overrun, then

goes quiet again when driving slowly for a while. Could that just be

the turbo working?

It's a 1.8T auto btw.

Does it get louder in volume when going around a bend in one direction? Could be a worn bearing in that situation, as they do whine a bit when on the way out.

Alternatively it could be the turbo "doin' itz thang". Driving the boss's Saab I always find the whistle/whoosh noise weird, but then I drive a diesel so not used to such quality refinements.

Seem to recall from watching reruns of Top Gear that the Saab has a low pressure turbo though, so it will be quiet and smooth...

This is a 2.0T (as opposed to 2.0t, which has a tiny turbo) so it is audible a bit. However, the car is generally very well soundproofed, comparable to my car too TBH... a bit of quality ;) Plus it's nice and quick, just a bit lack lustre for a 210HP car. :( Even a standard octy vRS would be as quick IMO!

Had two saabs and I would never have another one so long as I drive. Cars cr4p, dealers cr4p, mpg 22 !!!, servicing between

The turbo noise is more of a whistle than a whine. It's most noticeable under acceleration above about 2000 rpm.

I'd guess that the noise you are hearing is the transmission. It isn't unpleasant (at least, not on mine), but it's loud enough to be able to hear it shifting up, particularly from first to second. It's very quiet on the overrun, though (unless you persuade it to downshift early with the selector).

I should add that I don't hear it at all with the music on, so its not that

intrusive.

...and its not a bearing noise, I've experienced those before on older cars.
