Reducing soot on an aggressively mapped TDI...

Featured Replies

what he said - diesels are 'unthrottled' - excess air at all times - running lean. power varied by fuel amount put in....

Diesel engine's power is rated by 'smoke limit' - power at the point at which they produce smoke.

On top of it all - as pointed out above - timing of delivery counts at the limit. That's why uprated injectors help- pump all the fuel at the right cycle time for efficient burning. Od course, you push them too hard and you're back at the smoke limit again but with more power...

Another suggestion - perhaps propane fumigation might be an idea - do a search on here. It'd burn up the excess fuel with more power

Carefully and professionally set up you get far less smoke, more power and better fuel economy..

I'm also going to point out it's a 1.4TDI, so you don't want to be playing with propane etc. THis is mainly because it would be cheaper to get a VRS than go down that route. Just ask WW_VRS the problems he had with propane.

The PD160 might not fit, i really don't know, and is now £90 ish .

The bit they cut off is meant to stop water etc getting into the pipe.

Glad i didnt cut mine off

water was almost coming at me horizontally on my drive home the other day

Mark has some good points there - propane has to be set up properly by an experienced person - Wiebo did have a lot of probs with the way his system was set up - too aggressive IIRC. Jason liked his very much AFAIK.

The bit to stop water (trumpet) - do a search - it is supposed to stop water getting in which would destroy your engine (hydrolok). Some peeps have been running that way in the rainy UK for a long time without any probs....

My personal opinion (ducks down here) is that the Fab vRS was at its best in 2005 (before the BLT version). If you can get a good deal on a used one - it would be a good deal more power for the money in the long run...

I'm with Mark on that one, but I'm biased.....

Hope all of this helps

:D My system appears gentle enough to not actually be obtrusive. But time will tell whether I bother with it in the long run. :)

Oi! thought you were pure derv again!

So Jase - quick para on your thoughts on propane fumigation - please!

(thought I had made a spelling mistake at first, got properly pi55ed off, rofl...)

Cheers

Not feeling well enough to do a lengthy skit on the world of propane injection on TDIs but suffice to say it provides a bit more fuel, which helps with power, and you get better economy than running on diesel alone (car knows the propane is there, so cuts back on diesel usage generally)

I may be back on pure derv when my new injectors are in and fitted, but time will tell.

Get it mapped properly.

I can't help feel thats abit of a blanket statement. My vRS is aggressivly mapped, but its a bloody fantastic map with no power or boost spikes and a brilliantly smooth power and torque curve. It still however smokes like a bitch.

I don't think it's a blanket statement. I have at least 20 maps for my car in my laptop.

One of the maps gives me 197bhp and is smokey especially at spool up and it's from a supposedly great and wonderful tuner that i'm not going to name.

I have a map from another tuner that not many people have heard of and he gave me 220bhp that hardly smokes anymore than a stock PD130, so yes it is a lot to do with getting the car mapped properly.
