Reducing soot on an aggressively mapped TDI...

Featured Replies

I get major soot on full throttle above 3k rpm - just wondering how I can reduce this?

Its not a problem during in the day but at night its like a smog screen :)

Advice appreciated!

Panel Filter, PD160 intake, less foot?

So an after market cone filter - or does it have to be the PD160 air filter? Why does this reduce the soot?

The Panel filter replaces the paper filter in the airbox allowing more air to get through, and the 160 intake allows more air to get into the box. More air means a more complete burn of fuel and less soot.

Helped me a lot, but mine's not tuned. Still; should reduce the soot. Whether it's worth the price is another matter...

dose of millers sport 4, pd160 and performance panel filter, cage mod

So running no filter would be an ideal quick test before spending out on the PD160 method right?

No filter would be a very good way to kill your car. Yes.

no, running without any filter is not a very good idea.

And id say it does it all day long...not just at night!

You just tend to notice it more like i do in the headlights of the car behind!

Ahhh, wuss's, get a pair of your mums tights and get them across the intake instead of a filter ;)

Running no filter just for one test run (a few mins) to see if there is any difference I mean.

What is the cage mod? Also where can I get a PD160 filter and will it fit the 1.4 TDI engine?

Thanks

No filter = bad.

Just check what your current filter looks like and think if you'd like all that to be inside your engine.

PD160 intake is available from your SEAT dealer, but will set you back around 70 quid now I believe? You should be able to get a Green or K&N panel filter for your engine, I'd guess around 30-40 quid for that.

Cage mod has quite a few threads recently, just do a search or look on the Fabia page.

You could get the map turned down a bit - but if you don't notice the smoke during the day then any smoke at night is more likely to be a haze which is just made to look worse in car headlights.

^^^^^^!:)

Clouds of smoke are cool

Very true!

Right... so there is a difference between soot and haze?

It does look more grey then black.

So is there a different solution for reducing haze, what is haze?

Thanks

All part of the fun isn't it

you want less smoke? increase airflow or drop fuelling.

To increase airflow - replace EGR with allard pipe and yank off the intake to clear out the built up goop. Do a google for DIY "gasket match intake manifold" if you feel adventurous.

Cooler denser airflow = Forge FMIC

more flow at same boost = bigger turbo

more flow= uprated filter + PD 160 intake minus the trumpet

more accurate metering (?)= cage mod

I actually asked my mate to tune the car so that there is a goodish amount of smoke above 4k.....

It's nice to be able to tell tailgaters to F* off...

Goodish!

You say about taking the trumpet off, does this make the PD160 pipe more effective basil?

Get it mapped properly.

what are you coming up for, where are you going to be ?

trumpet off - kinda like scraping the bottom of the barrel - but every little helps.

If you manage to increase the airflow with as many DIY mods you may just get to the smoke level you can live with... and get a noticeable increase in power as the excess fuel gets burned up properly....

I hate to say it, but dervs run with an excess of air in the mixture.

The soot is from not having long enough to burn the amount of fuel injected before it is exhausted.
