That is what I like about the Felly, they're (just) quick enough & handle well enough stock to play big games with.

Enough is a relative term, my stock e30's handle well enough.. until you get in one with 24mmARBs and coilovers!

I would go for the 1.6 if you can afford it your budget. A decent mk1 1.6 shouldn't set you back too much. I have noticed a bit of a power difference between the two, especially when I go back to my garage and get a 1.3 as a courtesy car. Either one is a safe bet!

The 1.6 is a good engine-much more torquey than the 1.3...

However, the 1.3 is perfectly suited to the felly- its revvy, light and chain driven so I can rag the tits off it:rofl:

Very true, and they use the same amount of fuel as well at the end of the day - so you don't loose / gain much either way. Both are dead fun to drive :)

Not had a problem with my head gasket yet :D (that I know of [crossfingers]). But never taken it up to rev limiter so never *really* pushed it. From what I have read though the 1600 is well made and can tune up nicely :thumbup:

Ordinarily I would agree, what you say makes perfect sense!

but, I'm a bit of a deviant when it comes to engines. My white BMW is a 320i- drinks as much fuel as the 325i and is 40HP down...HOWEVER I like it, and thats why I'm keeping it as a 2 litre.

I've driven both the 1.3 and the 1.6 Felly extensively, and have to say the 1.3 is more fun to drive IMO

Headgasket doent look too bad on the 1.3, so Its not a major issue. I'd prob change it when I got it TBH

Thats not to say that if a 1.6 came up cheap I wouldnt take it:thumbup:

im not actually shure if they sell them anymore either i asked for a set of springs from them b4 and they said the stopped elling them , might have been the cheaper ones although you can get 35mm ones for £70 from a shop up north

Headgasket isn't a headache to do on these cars though i wouldn't have thought as there is no camshaft in the way. Has anyone else with a 1.3 had a head problem as mine seems fine apart from the misfiring that i am trying to locate!

The problem is now with so many cars of late having supposed issues with the head gasket i am often wary of righting cars off as having an endemic problem, it is often the case that the cooling system has been poorly maintained or is simply lacking water. A lot of people these days do not expect to have to look under the bonnet and in some cases refuse to do so. Headgaskets are also in some instances assumed to be the first diagnosis on many cars that aren't running right. For example according to Car mechanics magazine (no this is not a plug) inlet manifold issues and misfiring are often misdiagnosed to be a head job particularly on cars with a history of HG failure. This is certainly the case with the K series. However the K series also has a poorly designed cooling system that leaks in many places leading to their notorious reputation and eventually inevitable HG failure. If they had designed that heater hose and connections correctly i bet there wouldn't be half the cases

The skoda 1.3 engine in comparision has a very well designed cooling system with everything easily in view. The main problem relates largely to the stupid plastic thermostat which if stuck in the closed position will cause damage!!

On a different note and back to the thread there is a cheap 1.3 reconditioned engine on ebay if needed

The plastic thermostat casing is a VW "improvement". They were cast aluminium before.

I recently cured misfiring which happened only when cold by cleaning out the distributor cap and re-seating all the leads, plus spraying WD40 inside cap and around spark plugs and on top of the cap.

i have heard, that its not the fact that the gasket goes, its that on the older 1.3's the head will often bow and warp when the head does go.

every one i know who had a fav. had do get shot of it cuz of a head/head gasket problem.

MPI lump seemed ok once the head etc was cleaned up- spent a while cleaning it properly and checking for warpage- also runs really well now:thumbup:

apart from the no starting occasionally:eek:

Apparently that happened on the car I took the replacement 7 year old head off to keep as a spare should the worst ever happen. AFAIK the car it came off hadn't had the hg changed in that time.

Slight update!

Just got a new job, one that'll involve doing approx 3000 miles per month..

so, suddenly, the oil blend loving 1.9d shoots to the top of the possible candidates for felly based ownership...

anyone know of any for sale?
