New Head unit

Featured Replies

I am thinking of changing my head unit and would like to keep the existing CD changer. Does anyone know of a reasonable head unit which is compatible with the CD changer and will blend in with the green dash illumination. My current head unit is the symphony with a tape deck in a L&K. Also the speakers in the L&k are supposed to be uprated, so will fitting the infinity 652 speakers make much difference. Your comments would be appriciated.

Not sure on the head unit.

AFAIK the speakers in the L&K are not uprated, at least that's the impression given by the website.

It might be something only mentioned in the brochure...

To decide whether the Infinity's are needed, there's probably only two questions you need to ask:

a) Can I hear much in the way of bass and mid-range when the car's moving?

B) Do the speakers distort when you play it at the volumes you'd like to?

If the answer to these are "no" and "yes" respectively, you'd benefit from the Infinitys.

Hope this is of use to you,

Rob.

I posted last weekend re: the 652i speakers. They are easy to fit and do make a real difference. I'm going to upgrade the rears as soon as funds allow (getting married, money is tight:eek:) but I'll go only as far as replacing the current speakers. I'm not really into cutting holes etc. I'm just interested in getting a 'quality' sound not something that shakes my fillings loose.

My benchmark is the sound I got from the standard kit in my Golf. It was superior to the standard kit in the Skoda but the head unit is suspiciously similar, so it must be the cheap speakers.

If after all this you still want a new head unit then fair enough, at least you will have tried the cheaper option first ie brand new head unit and Skoda speakers...not good!

Don't some Golf's have the Monsoon package? Which adds an

amp and some nice speakers to the setup?

That was the impression I was under at least...

Mind you, if they use the similar Grundig head unit and it

sounded alright then the DAC in it can't be all that bad...

Cheers for the replies

Think I will get some infinity speakers in the front and see how it goes.

I thought the standard HU in VWs were of Blaupunkt origin?

Anyway, you can probably get a Panasonic HU with suitable wiring adapter as the autochanger is a Panasonic with a Blaupunkt type connector (yeah I know so a bit strange considering the standard HU is a Grundig:rolleyes:  ).

I will be putting my new HU (Blaupunkt) tomorrow so will let everyone know what the sound quality is like on the standard speakers but, I assume that although better will probably need to upgrade the fronts i.e 652is.

Remember if you are changing the HU you will need to get the wiring adapter to prevent the k-line and memory loss problems.

Cheers.

Adrian.

This is probably a stupid question but what is the k-line used for. With regards to the memory cable can you move the position of it on the connector block so that it goes to the memory of the radio.

One last question, the adaptor cable that you talk about, is this the same one you need to hook up a CD changer to the standard VW HU, if so what is the part number, where did you get it and how much is it.

All recent VW group cars now incorporate the new wiring looms and in here is a common communication line, k-line.

When changing the standard HU to an aftermarket HU, the k-line will have 12v applied to it. For the HU the k-line serves no purpose however if a service technician plugs in a diagnostic tool to the k-line the tool will get a 12v surge through it. Bad and expensive.

See the thread regarding "aftermarket radio problem".

The wiring adpater I refer to you can get from www.bluespot.co.uk

If you look for "VW wiring adapter" you'll get it and it cost

Rob,

All the VW's I've had or driven in the last few years (Lupo, Polo, Golf, Bora) have either the Beta (4 speakers, front only) or Gamma (8 speakers, front and rear). The Skoda system seems to be half way between the two for features but Gamma for the speaker set up. The menu functions, controls, display etc are all identical. All this led me to believe that changing the speakers would solve the sound quality problem. So far, so good.

There is some really nice kit available as factory fit options, this may be what you have seen. I particularly liked the little toy that compensated for the fact that most of the time you are nearest the front right side speakers giving a 'concert hall' sound where ever you are in the vehicle. I think it had flashy lights too!:D

This is turning into a longer post than I anticipated but I know where it is leading. Skoda vRS. 1.8T 180 bhp. Leather. Climate control. 17" alloys including full size spare. Lots of trickery like ABS, ASR and other things I don't understand. Trip computer. Crap stereo. Yours for

And you get blue dials in the Golf. A good justification for spending the extra
