I had/have issues with sound from my Blue Ray laptop not being recognised by the HDMI input. My laptop will only O/P 2 channel PCM (thanks Sony you bunch of morons……..long story) which I can only get into my 605 by plugging the HDMI directly into my Kuro telly (not the 605, as I mentioned, it wont recognise it for some reason) and then taking the Optical O/P from the telly and sticking it into one of the optical I/Ps of the 605. It’s then just a case of assigning inputs to buttons. What speakers are you using??

'Ray! a fellow 605 owner I can harass! That sounds like a pretty good hack to get your lappy working. Out of interest, what TV are you using (edit: just seen a Kuro - nice!)? Mine doesn't seem to be able to display the on screen menus from the 605. have you had problems with this?

I've tried all sorts of assignment combos for the DVD on the component menu but still can't get it to output via HDMI. I was looking forward to the upscaling feature, but I may just plug it back direct into the TV.

I watched a bit of 300 this afternoon on the PS3 bluray. I've yet to properly mess about with the speaker settings and equaliser, but I thought it sounded a bit tinny compared to my old Yamaha Amp.

I'm using Mission M70 Cinema speakers in 5.1 (I may upgrade to some combination of KEF 7.1 in the future)

I had a lot of fiddling about to get the On Screen menus to show and also the whol upscaling thing needs careful setting up as it is easy to strip the sound off and lose it. I had to read the instruction book pretty carefully to get it to do what I want. I currently use the Component out from my DVD directly into the telly as the picture quality is slightly better, the Upscaling/Upconverting processor in the 605 is quite good, but it isn’t a patch on the processors in the Kuro. The big brothers of our AV amp have fantastic high quality processors as used in high end upscaling DVD players etc. One day I would lie to upgrade to one.

Have you Biamped your front speakers? (if this is possible) as it does make a slight difference. When you go to look at the Kefs, do check out the Epos range (they are a bit trickier to source but I preferred them to the Quads and Kefs I listened to). They are beautifully built and have a very simple crossover in them, all there design seems to have gone into the cones/engineering of the speakers/cabinets themselves. The M3s are very sweet little speakers and the M5s (my current speakers) are a great bookshelf speaker that is a bit like an update of the LS3/5as. They are a bit more efficient too. I hope to have a pair of Epos M12.2s sometime in the New Year.

I’ve not noticed the amp sounding tinny, but I have the system in a ‘not too big’ room which will help, as well as a set of great speaker stands. Decent speaker wire makes a noticeable difference if you haven’t got some already, but I would avoid the salesmen that tells you the direction of the cable makes a difference to the sound (quite a popular belief amongst Audiophiles) the people who record sounds cant hear this (I’ve tried it on them) and I certainly can’t hear it in my living room, but there again I’m a Sound Engineer so I am probably deaf.

Thanks Lady E will go back and read the destructions again, not me favourite task like. I think I will return the DVD to the TV input as it was a really good picture any way.

I'm off to google those speakers, they sound very expensive, it never ends once you start....

I haven't Bi amped my front speakers as they only have one set of +ve and -ve inputs on them. I may even keep the missions purely as surrounds and invest in a quality set of front floorstanders.

Good luck with the destructions, I can’t remember where it is in them, but there is one bit that you have to take note of if you want sound to be decoded from your HDMI. My Telly has 3 inputs so I can always use the digital Co-ax/Optical ins if I had any problems and sometimes it’s easier to do things like that I find.

The speakers aren’t the cheapest, but as you say you can start with upgrading the fronts and go from there. I set my system up without a centre and found the Audigy set up thingy works brilliantly. It gave me a really good centre image with things like Pro Logic, I did have to tweak the overall settings a little for my taste, but it got pretty close using the automatic setting.

One thing to note is, having bi-amped my fronts, I can’t run a 7.1 system, as I have used the extra rear channel to run the bi-amp’d fronts. If you have an isolated house or if you hate your neighbours, you will have to get a decent powered Sub Woofer too. These seem to start at about £200-250 for a basic one and then go up to the price of a small car for ones that will loosen your filings.

The missions include a powered sub which is good enough to get the neighbours bangin on the wall:D

I still think the sound was better before, although maybe I need to get used to a more rounded sound delivery as the Yamaha was excellent at delivering boomy SFX sounds, but the speech was always too quiet. I was forever turning it down when the action started, then turning it back up when the quiet talking bits came on.

I'll have a proper play tomorrow.
