Skoda UK access to personal details

Featured Replies

I was just going through the contact us page on the new Skoda site:

Škoda - About Å koda - Contact Us

and it quite frankly scares me!

If someone knows my Registration plate, surname, and postcode...

They will have access to my Name, House details, my telephone number, mobile number and email address!!

Do you think I'm being over cautious...or do you think this information should be more protected!?!

Well, they could get hold of your home phone if they knew your name and address (unless you're ex-directory of course!) and likewise could find out your mobile if it's listed. Similarly for the house number, anyone walking past your house would be able to suss that one (unless you put your car in the garage!)

I suppose the only one that couldn't necessarily be found easily any other way might be your email address, but then short of the potential for spam, I don't see that as too big a deal myself...

If you bought the car from a main dealer, won't Skoda already have access to these details?

Chris

it looks like it's a way of finding which dealer it should put you in contact with

I can understand a lot of this information is easily accessible from other sources.

I would much prefer it not to display all that information on such little input. It would be better to confirm it behind the scenes than be too clever and show they have all your details.

Then just pick up the phone and ring them :P

lol

But that still doesn't affect that all the information is still accessible to someone other than me, dealer and skoda!

Coincedenc there as only yesterday was i on that site for something and after nearly filling in all the spaces it stopped not allowing me to send, did you have any problem vim 2000?.

No, I didn't go through to the end. Decided I wanted to speak to a person than wait for a reply.

I was shocked to see it display all my detail so easily.

it only seems to work with new cars. I put my current details in and got nothing, however I put in the reg of my old vRS, and all the details popped up.

If you are worried about your private information being made public and you can be identified by such then speak to skoda and ask them about it.

If this doesn't help I'm sure the information commissioner would

F**k me!

I just put a now scrapped cars reg plate into it and it came with my family details and parents address etc.

That's shocking:eek:

EDIT: Just spoken to somebody there and pointed out the issues with that. They are looking into it as a matter of urgency and will be getting back to me as they agree that data shouldn't be up there.

I agree with you Vimto2000, in my opinion you are not being over cautious. One of the requirements an organisation has under The Data Protection Act is to keep data they hold SECURE.

Putting my name, postcode and reg number in, like you, it then provided my phone number etc. This is not information that I want to have so easily accessed.

Thanks for finding this out. I will be contacting Skoda myself requesting they secure access to my details far better.

By the way, I don't why every line of my last post starts

&nsb..................bloody computers I hate them !

I got a call back from skoda today to tell me they have taken the details down and are speaking to the data protection register to find out what they can/can't do and what is best practise.

Really friendly person, actually seemed to care and was very helpful too :)
