Powerline network adapters

Featured Replies

Is anyone running their network connection through their home electrical ring??

I've been looking at getting some Netgear Wall Plugged Adapters to make my home network a bit faster and more stable (currently on wireless but can be a bit dodgy) and these look to be an ideal solution. Unfortunately I don't know anyone who is using them to find out if they are any good in the real world.

I use the Devolo ones at home - think I have six around the place and they connect PC's, PS3, printers and even a NAS and I have no problem with them whatsoever. I moved from a Buffalo and then a D Link N wireless setup and have no regrets whatsoever.

Hope this helps.

my mate uses these,he has no complaints about them other than the price

I'm quite tempted by this powerline stuff as well... what sort of throughput do you get on them in actual use?

175-190mbps

That should be enough for what I want to do...:D

So will this sort of thing work ok if I plug one in upstairs and one in downstairs?

They should work fine, however I would be more concerned over security. These things are more insecure than wireless networks, if someone in your locality on the same phase also had the same type, they can theoretically connect to your network without you knowing a thing.

Ah, that doesn't sound very good at all... looks like I'm running CAT5/6 or Fibre down to the living room then.. :(

Hi,

I use the Netgear HDXB101 adapters, recently installed some Devolo adapters(dLAN 200 AV Starter Kit) for my sister and have to say they appear to be faster than my Netgears, but this could be due to her house having newer wiring than mine.

On the security side the devices have internal encryption which you can activate (Frequently asked questions of dLAN)

Regards

Mapgo :)

If you have more than a couple of devices, I think you will find the cost of getting cat5 professionally put into the wall and a cheap 100Mbs/1Gbs switch would be less than buying a quantity of these devices.
