TDI engine life

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone knew the average life on the TDI engines, its a elegance (2001), 110BHP version, engine is stock except Ram-air induction kit, im not sure whether to get the engine remapped or just to leave the car for a year or 2 and sell it, dont want to remap it and then the gives up at say 110k, i keep it serviced and up togeather since im a mechanic. any rough ideas, oh, engine has 95k on the clock now.

thanks

The engine itself should last for a quarter of a million miles or longer as long as it's serviced ok.

The turbos on those can soot up and need either stripping and cleaning or replacing if they are driven too gently though.

It's also not just the engine itself that you have to consider - there's the clutch which would be put under more strain by a remap and then there's the rest of the drivetrain and suspension that is getting on a bit.

id also say that the induction kit may mean more dirt getting through to the turbo etc, other wise as said above will last much longer then the rest of the car really if maintained properly.

my old petrol vectra was over 130k and felt tighter than most newer ones by quite a bit.

I reckon the car will feel leggy and tired long before the engine gives up the ghost ;)

My PD130 Passat is on 130k and honestly, the engine feels like better than new. Seen many examples over 200k and running just fine too. :)

Mine's coming up to 100K over the next few months. Engine itself feels lovely! some toher bits on the car are causing me headaches though. See other post about central locking & windows... Most expensive thing I've had done to the engine is a cam belt change.

I'd say 200k will be no problem as long as you do regular oil changes. If you remap I'd come off long life servicing and use a quality oil myself.

Also I'd just change the normal air filter every 10k rather than 40k and you will get a massive difference while not having other issues.

I've seen a few Octavia TDI's with 350,000+ on them as Taxi's, I spoke to one of the owner drivers who told me only thing he'd replaced aside from servicing was the turbo and gearbox in that mileage!

I know of a few taxi drivers using this engine, and its good for 250k, but they say turbo's last about 120k........

edit: icraig beat me to it!

Don't say things like that, mines done 131k now...

has it ever had a turbo? (yours tom!)

Nope, but it did get a good strip down and clean not so long ago.

As long as the car is driven pretty hard occasionally, and its well maintained, I see no reason why the turbo shouldn't last the life of the car. :)

My 2000 TDI is at around 230000 ish miles (ex taxi) and is still going very strong inc remap and is still afaik on its original turbo (although i do have a spare just in case)

Ive had to strip out the turbo since ive had it due to sooty veins and i service it more regularly than you usually would for obvious reasons

Some steering & suspension parts plus the driveshaft CV`s etc ive also done as they were getting a little slack due to its high mileage as Alex rightly pointed out

the engine itself though is still good to go with probably just a little more tappety noise than i would like but i can live with that

I expect to get a lot more miles out of the old girl yet before i have to think about either a transplant or a new octy (touching lots of wood)

sounds good, i knew the life should be pretty good as my mk4 golf 1.6 had 146,000 miles and that felt like new, dont thinks theres much risk of the turbo clogging up, as i generally work her hard, not stupidally hard, but 3-3500rpm.

All my taxi driver mates in my town are on 265000+ and the engines are sweet so don,t need worry:thumbup:

my mum n dad's octi tdi90 is fast aproaching the 110,000miles and no signs of any failures coming up. Still drives well and does 15-20trips per down to a small village just outside limoges in France.

Mine on the other hand has over 93,000 miles and just started modding it. feels like a new car although the clutch did fail within a week or two of the remap.
