Would you buy an Octavia with 171k?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am looking at replacing my wife's petrol Scenic with a diesel Octavia. I have seen a W plate Octavia GLX Tdi with 171,000 miles on autotrader for £1300. I am struggling to decide whether to go for it due to its mileage. If it turns out it has decent service history including cambelt changes do you think it would be worth it?

I have a Y plate Fabia Tdi with 126k and it hasn't missed a beat. I know that these engines can run and run but I am interested to get people's opinions on this.

Thanks.

At that price I wouldn't rule it out , but I'd want to check it over quite carefully.

as said check it over carefully, look at suspension, gear box, etc in detail, if it loks good then go for it. maybe haggle a bit on price though.

No way, spend a Bit extra, for a lower mielage car. You will spend a lot less in the long run.

No, Simply the base parts will be well in their window for failing, i would see it as false econamy.

I'd consider it, though it'd have to have full service history.

Also as has been said above check the gearbox, as they are notorious for going on diesel SDI Octys (I assume this applies to TDI's too)

Other than that look out for use as a Taxi, so heavily worn seats extra aerials etc. Though this doesn't mean its a bad car, as Taxi's are usually very well looked after. But you have to ask why are they selling it? As I've found Taxi drivers usually run them into the ground unless they are getting unreliable, then they're no use to them as there not earning them money!

I would also consider it, I have run lots of high mileage cars. The last being a mondeo, with well over 150K miles on it, and apart for a small problem with the gearbox that cost less than £100 to fix it never went wrong in 2 years.

Depending on the history, condition and ultimately how it drives, sure its worth a look :)

I'd consider it however you need to be prepared to scrap it if things fail and it becomes un-economical to repair. You'd also be better if you were a little bit handy on the car DIY side of things.

Both very valid points Stu.

I'd only consider it as I feel fairly confident with a spanner. If you are no good at DIY then I'd look elsewhere tbh...

I'd be slightly weary that it hasn't got age on its side either...
