Help on selecting a PC

Featured Replies

Guys,

I'm looking at getting a PC at home

I'm living in Ireland and a friend works in www.jaguarcompsys.ie , so they might be able to look after me.

But with regards on what to choose I would welcome any info on what best to go for.

I was originally looking at buying the below machine, as I was also getting a good deal but this has got too expensive now. I was also looking at buying I was an all in one Printer/Scanner/Copier, the one I was looking at was

HP Photosmart PSC 2175, anyone have any comments ?

HP Pavillion T450 with a 17" Flatscreen,

Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz Processor

512 MB DDR RAM

120GB hard drive

GeForce NVIDIA 5200 - 128mb video ram

DVD rom - DVD-writer +R/+RW

CD RW

8 in 1 universal memory card reader

network ready

modem

6x USB 2.0

2x Firewire

Wireless keyboard & Mouse

Floppy drive included

Cheers.

You can proberbly get a better deal going to a smaller independant rather buying a brand name machine. These tend to use simillar and in some cases better components, or better still get the parts and build it yourself. If you go this way choose an established brand, in the office we buy from Stone Computers and avoid the likes of HP, except for our servers which are all HP/Compaq.

I'd agree with Manny.

Although I'd also want a dual standard dvd writer which supports both +R/RW and -R/RW. A +/- dvd rewriter costs only about

Also drop a PM to young mr Horton (sihorton), he might be able to do a deal, certainly on components and alike.

And what they said...stressing the what do you want it for role...

Or you could chat to Rob, who might even build it for you ;)

All looks to be in order spec-wise (as in no inconsistencies - it might be overkill or underspec depending on what you will use it for!). What are you doing with regards the operating system?

Wouldn't bother with Firewire if you don't have any Firewire devices - you can always add a card in later if needs be.

Rob.

I'd agree with Rob, looks ok. If you are going to be playing the latest games then look at getting a radeon 9800 card.

Spec looks ok.

How much is it? If it was

A friend has this' date=' a couple of guys use it and they tell me theres no problems (apart from having to load some drivers for various hardware)

I have the PS2 so I'm not really buying it for the games, yet I want to get a fairly good spec while I am getting one.
