Cruising speeds

Featured Replies

Just wondering what people consider to be a good cruising speed for their vehicles

Since driving a Sprinter back in 2005 I've made 65 my normal cruising speed.

Used to be 70-80 in my older Astra 1.4 before it got wrote off.

Why 65 for me?

Well the Sprinter had a limited top speed of 78 and at that speed the engine was a little noisy and you'd get sick of it after a whilst (was the 308CDI not the more powerful 311CDI)

But in my Skoda 65mph keeps the engine at about 3000 revs, so the cabins not unpleasant, keeps the engine in the power band and it helps on economy too with rising fuel costs.

65mph is probably my cruising speed on a decent A road with good visibility, good conditions, and little traffic or sharp bends. :)

Motorway cruising is usually 75 with cruise on.

All the above are indicated speeds although my speedo only overreads by about 2%.

on a motorway and nsl duel carraigway its 70mph,on a single carraigway nsl 60mph,thats my most comfotable cruising speeds as above tha i am uncomfortable as i have to keep my eyes open for police

Whatever the car's top speed is..........................

Seriously it depends on what the vehicles feels comfortable doing as every vehicle settles down at a certain speed. The Octavia seems to like to cruise at 80 oddly enough.

The overriding factor is of course the road conditions.

65-70 ona good clear A SC road. 80ish on a DC A road. (indicated, so probably quite near the speed limit) *cough* on a clear motorway in good conditions.

On a clear motorway I'll often be one of the fastest vehicles, in poor weather I'll get overtaken.

Rain or shine my Felly seems happy at 65 although I think my wipers need a clean or replacing as just this week they seem to grate on the windscreen unless the screen gets really wet.

My sisters Micra is happiest at 65 although I am really uncomfortable pushing that any higher as the steering wheel shakes. Still sounds good for a 1.0l though but not as good as my 1.6

I can say with some authority that a 1.0 yaris will not do more than 93, and sounds awful.

60 on A roads single carriageways and usually something between 65 and 75 on duel carriageways / motorways. As has been mentioned though, it is conditions dependant.

Sounds like the wheels might need balancing. Our fleet of 1.0-16v Micras would happily cruise at an indicated 80mph (and still return 50+mpg :D)

50+

Its not managing that i dont think. I shall have to measure it when the tanks full. Thats my sisters Micra

On a good run mine manages 42mpg.

The Micra is prob doing about that on the mixed cycle.

About 75-77mph on motorways, 65 on A roads, all being well in terms of conditions and traffic.

mine on the autobann likes 80, gets up to 100 easily and unnoticable and livens up at 110-130. steering feels to light at 130 to want to take it much higher.

70 on the motorway just so I don't need to think about plod or cameras.

60-70 on single carriageway A roads I know well.

To be honest the TFSI seems happiest sitting at about 85. Not so good for the wallet though.

On the motorway it's cruise control at an indicated 78mph

I tend to find 60-65mph about my cruising speed.

Get decent mpg but not going slow enough to cause annoyance to those behind.

Although i do tend to go a bit slower with the kiddie in the car.

What with traffic and average speed cameras I don't get much above 50mph. If and when the roads are clear though I find 60-65 an A-roads and 75-80 on motorways seem comfortable speeds

The Octy likes an indicated 80-90, but i tend to sit at an indicated 70+ a gnats scrotum on motorways.

I stick to the speed limit when its clear and safe to do so on all roads.

Samantha thinks it should be an indicated 80; I try and keep it nearer the actual speed limit though.

not wishing to get flamed, so I will not post.....

on a motorway , with the cruise on it's ,78 ,

on a motorway, towing a caravan it's 62-65

:) On the motorway most of my 5 speed rear engined 130/136 fleet like to cruise at about 70-80mph. I recently got my 1985 Rapid 120 4 speed on the road, and that is definately a more leisurely, noisier cruiser.....it likes to cruise at about 60-65mph. Rapid?....yeah, righto! :D

 they're all liars!

Depends on the conditions - been doing 60 to work recently to save on the juice as its so busy - dunno how accurate the speedo is but its faster than the lorries. When in Germany will cruise at anywhere between lorry speed and 90 depending on the conditions.

I used to do 90 all the time (in Germany) but as I get older I get slower (and more careful) - now 80 is comfortable. Plus I always find my eye on the instant mpg...

A roads it's down to revs - I try to keep it around 2k in 6th, any lower and vibration becomes an issue and torque isn't there.

I mostly try to keep at 2-figure speeds on the motorway :rolleyes:

200mph 210 if the wind is behind me!

7mph on my pushbike:rofl:
