Which satnav?????

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I'm trying to decide between getting the Tom Tom One V3 Europe or the Garmin Nuvi310.

I've heard with Tom Tom you have to pay extra for things like speed camera locations (essential for me!!!;)). Is this the case with Garmin as I can't find a definitive answer anywhere!

Which one would you recommend? Any other suggestions for ones I should be looking at in the up to £150 bracket?

Cheers:D

IMHO

I have tried a few different ones including in car PC nav and for ease of use its got to be a Tom Tom every time.

Look for a 4.3 wide screen one much nicer. I have a one XL europe

Speed cameras you can get for a bargin at "pocketgpsworld dot com"

the nuvi 310 is an older model.

I have been using Tomtom for years and have never had a real problem...

I use tomtom and i have had no problems including driving in france with it.

Another tomtom user here. I have tomtom 5 on my pda, tomtom 6 on my Nokia N95, and we also have a Tomtom Go 910 which is now running tomtom 7.

I have played with other satnav software/systems, but I find the tomtom far easier to use. The big touchscreen buttons, make it easy to use and the user interface is simple to understand.

i use an AA A5 map booklet. hasnt let me down ever.

I've been using tomtom for a few years now and it seems pretty good to me.

With regard speed cameras i use the one's from PocketGPSworld as they only work out a quid a month and according to a lot of people are a lot more accurate than the tomtom camera database.

Cheers

Dave.

another tomtom here 2years and never a problem,so simple my dad can even use his:D

Tomtom one V2 which after some massive software problems now seems to work and a Garmin Nuvi 660FM are in the family.

Both seem very nice.

Most use the same mapping software now so starting to become more price related and/or ease-of-use (or 'bling' style to some people as well?). I've had a few brands and the current TomTom seems easiest so far (if 'basic' compared to some others). It also has advantage that I have a bracket for use on my motorbike. I have personally recommended TomToms when asked and all users have seemed happy with their purchases. If I was buying one again tomorrow first choice would be TomTom but I would also check others out and be led a little on price as all so similar now

I run TomTom 5 on a PDA and no problems at all.

Have used Honda, VW and Toyota built in systems and nothing comes anywhere near the ease of use of TomTom,

Only disadvantage with TomTom is navigating across borders in Europe when you want to use roads that are not on the "major roads" map (e.g. France to France through Geneva without using the Swiss toll roads). You have to switch map at the border. They may have solved this with the more recent versions.

I got one of these the other week - cheap as chips and as good as anything any of my friends and family have. Not on your list, but thought I'd put it down anyway...

I've used TomTom quite a lot over the past few years, and really like them. Never experienced any problems when crossing boarders in Europe (as someone else mentioned), I've been to France, Germany and Switzerland no problems.

I got a TomTom One v3 in September, and it came with Speed Camera locations as standard. I think you have to pay to update them, but I haven't got round to that yet. TomTom also has the option for you to record the locations of Speed Cameras that aren't already on the mapp, and upload their locations to their website (should you so wish).

I record TomTom every time

I have a TT one V2 GB. Am very happy with it, use it daily for navigation to any one of 15000 POI's (customer sites) that I visit daily. These can be in city centers or on forest tracks or hill tops. Never let me down. Easy to use out the box but better to read the manual to get even more functionality out of it.

Has mapshare technology so you can edit some roads for been one way etc. Speed cams are 40 a year (weekly updates) and are IMO better than PocketGpsworld (I have used both). The users on PGW often add cameras that arnt cameras (flashy speed signs, Traffic Master sensors) so I got fed up of loads of false alarms.

I use a Garmin nuvi300. Very happy with it, especially as it was sub £150.

I would recommend pocketgpsworld camera db

they actually have separated confirmed speed camera POI databases from the unconfirmed ones (like the flashy speed signes, traffic master sensors or whataver that steve mentions) and you don't have to have these ones enabled if you don't want to.

Actually each type of camera is split by speed limit so for example, you could have all the 30mph SPECs switched on and the 50mph off if you wanted to.

as they are separated in different camera type/speed based POI databases this means you can also set them up differently....e.g. a 100 or 200 yard warning in a 30mph zone might be OK, but not so good when you are cruising at the national speed limit on a dual carriage way and get a 60mph warning!....so you can set that to get it say 400 yards in advance or whatever you prefer.

Another vote for Tom Tom -I had V3 and V4 on Palm, moved to a Go 510 a couple of years ago. I've used it in Spain and France, as well as the UK. the only trouble I've had is that the mounting bracket won't hold it's vertical position in hot condtitons, but that's all.

If you want to use the traffic feature, you need to make sure you're phone's compatible (my current one isn't :(), but speed cameras etc come down via a PC.
