Cat D car!

Featured Replies

My mate just bought a Cat D Meriva the other week. It'd had a front impact but you wouldn't know to look at it. The front fogs that should have been on the car weren't, but other than that the price was the only give away. It was even on it's original plates.

What did he hit? His garage :D???

I somehow think that is actually more than a cat D. I have been following it's various appearances, and reappearances on Ebay and have wondered if it was actually being legitimately bidded on before....

Anyway - I reckon there's a LOT of work involved. I think around £2000 would need spending on parts alone

Whole front end

Airbags, airbag ECU and seatbelt units

2 new wings

1 new vRS allow

Probably engine mounts as engine has been shoved hard

Shoved engine might mean fooked back end of the engine as it was pushed against the bulkhead.

To me, it's worth about £300, no more. I would actually go and buy it and repair it for £300 too. :) Have the facilities within reach to bring that car back on the road I think.

I'd say prob looks like too much of a project.

This car was prob a Cat D before said accident unless he means it is Cat D now

Looks like its hit a lampost at some speed to do that.

Needs a radiator, air con radiator, front end rebuild, engine moving back to normal position

Plus you'll have to check the structure, the safety cell and the chassis for any damage.

He does say the car doesnt start and is stuck in gear suggesting clutch and gearbox damage.

Unless you really REALLY think its worth buying and working on or more likely selling bits off.

It can easily be put back on the road , but that's a hell of a lot of damage and it won't be cheap at all.

Major bodywork to fix , new wheels and possibly a new engine , and it still won't be worth much

Would you want a crash rebuild? have you not seen the 5th gear crash test. rebuild focus vs uncrashed one.... ?

The thing that puts me off is that the engine looks like it has damaged the bulk head.

I have a garage that it could go in and be repaired over the next 12months or so.

I will check out completed items on ebay to see what it made.

It would only be used by me traveling to and from work (5 miles) and track days.

I'd say that was more than a CAT D.

To me it looks like the bulkhead is bent and the dash has been pushed back.

You'd need a new dash as well - the airbags rip through it when they deploy.

I'd be surprised if it didn't need stretching back.

Well, if you feel up to it. ;)

I've already priced up a potential repair and sell-on, and it's very borderline whether it makes any profit at all. :)

Yeah this car has been on quite a few times.

My Dad bought an accident damaged Freezer van Transit for £700 V Reg Spent another £800 getting the bodywork done.

The freezer didnt work properly, the rear doors looked like they were open and it wasn't worth anything.

A serious waste of money.

Unless you plan to do it up and keep it until its either written off or major componant failure then you're going to lose a lot of money and time.

I have just checked the sellers ratings and i am put off via what he has purchased in the past.I'm a Man City fan.

Just checked past auctions and it sold for £655 couple of weeks ago.

I've seen that fabia on ebay few times, no one brave enough to go for it.

Looks like it lost the fight with the lamp post @ some serious speed.

mine was a cat C car (which meant i had 2 take it 2 vosa 4 a ID check b4 they would give me a log book or anything) and mine didnt look that bad. mine needed bumper headlights x2 'A' piller and door and a new rad. that one on ebay has alot of damage plus u wont get ur money back coz its just 4 a look-a-like VRS. there aint nothing wrong wif damage repairables if u do them correctly and proffesionally. my sis smashed her corsa up after it being a CAT D front end damage, and it with stud the accident better than the car she hit up the bum! most of the cars ive eva had have been some sorta write off. but insurances nowadays write cars off 4 silly little things coz they quote the car on having brand new main dealer parts with main dealer labour and pick up little things like dints and stuff. uv just gota find the right 1 m8, and that 2 me doesnt look like a good one! :thumbdwn:

If I did get it, I would repair it on the front with a standard facelift bumper and the round fogs, and find a replacement rear bumper and backbox - Then sell the other bits as vRS items on Ebay (rear bumper, 3 vRS alloys, backbox) That car would go 100% back to standard if I did it (or as close as possible at least)

I found it difficult to read as well.

I don't believe that is only a cat D.

I've seen cars with that much damage at B's due to damage to the bulkhead.

That has to be at least a C as I can't believe they would let that back on the road without an inspection cert.

Jay, I think buying a CatD is an excellent route into buying a vRS, but this one really isn't it.

The auction just doesn't seem honest, the damage is too extensive, and at the end of the day you are spending several thousand on some ******ised mongrel wannabe... :P

Don't be put off by deployed airbags, but damage to the bulkhead is out of bounds imho. If the front chassis legs are damaged a couple of hours on a jig will sort it ;)

Keep on looking, but go with your gut feeling - if its anything like mine, then you'll realise that this one is a dog.

If you look at that one the roof is deformed above the passenger front door.

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR.

I found it difficult to read as well.

You guys are showing your age!:P;):D

It would be best stripped for parts then scrapped I think.....

Look at the lines between the doors on the passenger side, the roof is damaged as already stated, this would seriously compromise passenger cell integrity in the event of another crash, even if you could initially straighten it out.

95% of the time, damage to the roof means its not worth repairing.
