Stripping wax etc

Featured Replies

In the process of getting a foam lance for my pressure washer, and wanted to know what's the best product for stripping all existing product from the car?

Wash it with warm water and vinegar.

One wash with fiary liquid will do the trick, but rinse well!! and dont repeatedly wash with fairy liquid is not good for the paint.

I'm intending to do a full strip down, then clay, glaze, wax anyway...

No... "specialist" products?

Try a product called "Menzerna Top Inspection" or try a 1:1 solution of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and distilled water that will do it

Surely washing claying then polishing will take off any existing layer of wax, follow with a glaze and or sealant then a couple of layers of wax and fannies your uncle :D

I would say it wil get rid of 95% of it but get it completely free of any product the those products above will work. But like i said before washing up liquid will strip wax, just one wash.

if you want to do it properly with out potentially messing up the trim etc id use All Purpose Cleaner in the foam lance.

If you mix it at about 4:1 the wax will be gone and the trim will be safe

When I want to strip the paint completely of any wax and fillers etc, I'll fill the foam lance with washing up liquid and leave it on the car for a good few minutes. Then use the two bucket method and rinse well. After this I'll clay the car and by this time most if not all of the wax will have been removed.

Whatever remains on the paint will get removed when your cutting into the paint anyway so I wouldn't bother using a specialist product. And even if your not cutting intot he paint for paint correction, before applying a wax I'd use a paint cleaner. I use Zymol HD Clense which is a paint cleaner and a glaze. Then I apply Zymol Carbon over this.

All Purpose Cleaner?

What specific product?

I disagree.

I did somebodies car and their mother washed it in strong fairly liquid. The wax was still beading afterwards.

I suggest stardrops. 67p at Sainsbury last i checked :)

Beading does not really represent anything please see here

I know that, but it isn't conclusive and mainly states about spotless paint beading. If the car is dirty and then cleaned in fairy but it's beading in the rain as it was then there is still something on the paint so the fairy hasn't stripped all the wax.

If you have another search on DW you will find a thread stating that some people don't think using fairy actually strip all the wax off and might just reduce it as any overly strong shampoo would.

so that orange stuff should do the job?

I'd use Meg's All Purpose Cleaner, their Degreaser, or Virosol/MC2 citrus degreaser. I would NEVER put Fairy or a similar washing up liquid within a mile of the paintwork, as it contains salt.

Last time I needed to do a full detail, I foamed with Virosol then used a separate two buckets with a 10:1 Virosol in solution in it, and a separate washmitt.

Steve

I'd agree about the salt in fairy being bad.

FWIW some screenwashes include salt .

Like i said i like stardrops myself, as it is cheap and effective, but any APC will do.

Thats why i stated to rinse well. But i would never put virosol near my car or my wheels its ph is 11.4 nearly the same of ammonia!

Everybody has different ways of doing things that why there are so many products out there. I use aldi APC its £5 for 5lts's its ph balanced, it keeps me happy.

surely hough the degreasing foam will remove wax from area that wont be waxed? (i.e areas behind panels etc) and this will leave them open to attack?

I agree, thats why i wipe APC or super degreaser on with a microfibre when stripping protection. however if a detail is done properly all wax will be re applied to door shuts etc.

These products wont be strong enough without high concentration and agitation to remove waxoil etc.

Apologies for the topic revival.

Having just had my clay bar delivered (my first ever one) and a tin of Collinite 476, I am wanting to strip off all my previous product, namely AG EGP.

I have bought Asda Smart Price All Purpose Cleaner - will this do the job? (Stardrops was sold out).

If so, shall I just wipe the solution over the paintwork the paintwork with a clean cloth - probably a dish clean dish cloth?

I will then get some Demon Shine Rapid Dirt Remover on and then get on with the rest of the work. Is it right to do APC then Demon Shine or vice-versa?

Thanks in advance.

Paul.

I would mix a solution of APC in a spray bottle, pressure sprayer or foam lance and use it as a pre wash, rinse then wash as normal (basic Halfords shampoo or G3 Detox is good for stripping wax). I don't know what the dirt remover is but it sounds like an unnecessary step as I would move straight on to claying after washing (unless you have a tar or fallout remover).

I used g3detox with some apc and fairy added, followed by a tar remover and ironx as recommended by chrisRS. I then shampoo'd again with ag shampoo before I waxed with ag high fev wax. Feeling the paintwork after I shampoo'd it was smooth so I didn't use a clay bar. Feeling it again this week after 6 months it's still smooth and I'm wondering if this is because I often use a QD after each wash.

Thoughts?

I just use g3 detox with autobrite magifoam in my snowfoam lance, then rinse and wash with g3 detox.

Isn't washing up liquid also used for wax stripping?
