AMD Rolling Road results thread

Featured Replies

In a similar fashion to Mr Vegas piccy thread - here is a thread for the actual results...

It was a great day and it was an opportunity to see pretty much all of the tuners represented.

On the Octy side we had:

* standard cars

* AMD remaps

* Jabba remaps

* Revo remap

* APR V-tune

* and the infamous Autocar roadtest car courtesy of Mr Freakcrab!

(Can someone more knowledgable about the Furby's fill in the blanks for the diesel tuners please!)

It's fair to say that almost everyone (except Des + Freakcrab ;) ) were fairly surprised about how low the figures were. Saying that the figures, although low were at least consistantly 25ish bhp lower than other rollers.

The printouts from AMD are not particularly detailed and dont show things like temperature - which was pretty damn hot!

I'll start the ball rolling with my figures and have attached 3 piccys for you to look at:

1) Torque. Comments were that it probably feels nice as i have a spike at the beginning, but then it tails off so it's all down hill after 3k revs :eek:

2) Boost. I think i may have been the only one who got a printout of this. AMD said my boost map was all over the place and so bad they printed it out for my info. They reckoned having the DV in back to front (which loads of us do as it sounds louder...) was a contributing factor to this. When I asked them to run it again with the DV swapped round they said no...

3) Power. AMD said power was well down on what it should be, the car is overfuelling, the decat is messing up the ECU, my DV was not working (Forge 006 installed back to front - they said it wasn't recirculating - I say rubbish!), the ECU light is on and robbing loads of power (again I say rubbish - if it was in limp mode it would be robbing power by AFAIK having the light because of the cat make no differernce).

Engine mods are:

decat + 2.5" straight thru exhaust,

ABD LAN + CAI

ABD TIP

Forge 006

Jabba remap (not 'tweaked' since TIP + DV installed)

So let's see some graphs + have your comments chaps!

Hopefully attached are the results for my totally standard Octy RS. BHP came out as 185 which is more or less what I was expecting. If the rollers were reading 25 too low then that would mean was 210 really - which I seriously doubt.

Well, not as impressive as any of the vRS motors that turned up, but here's my results...

bhp: 107.4 @ 6056

lb ft: 96.5 @ 5685

There were only 3 including Ross'!!

Mine was

146.7bhp @ 3621

281.4 lb ft @ 2420

although with the Fabias I noticed that none of the air was aimed at the Intake.

I have a bodged-together air feed originating where they screwed in the tow bolt thingy next to the fog light, so got some air that way :)

The other blower pointing towards my other fog light probably did very little though apart from maybe remove a few dead flies...!

Interesting how Janes standard RS reading came out exactly as it should where other were saying that they were less than on other rollers on previous days.

Also with 1 or 2 jabba chipped cars showing less than 200 bhp and if AMD are claiming 220bhp after being chipped on THEIR rollers might it be that it is worth the (considerable) extra cost. Or maybe I'm talking rubbish (which wouldnt be the first time)

EDIT: or maybe thats what they want us to think! :D

I do hear what you are saying Jane - but some of the remapped vRS's had less that 10bhp more than yours. I know "it's not about the figures it's the way it drives" but that just seems a bit odd to me :confused:

So was there an AmD Octy there as a comparison?

Remember folks... higher boosted cars (chipped ones) are that much more susceptable to heat affect on a dyno. Seen it many times. Std cars perform well and slight above OE spec, and chipped ones read less than expected... but are getting rather hot. I was'nt there, so can;t comment re fans and cooling etc.. But AmD do have a good dyno cell from what I've heard. Hot day does'nt help.

Thats why I 'cheat' and pack my charge cooler with ice for RR runs.. as its more representative of on the road wind through the IC's or pre-rad etc.

I think there was an AMD octy there (said AMD on the side anyway!) dont know whose it was but will be interesting to see what figures he got.

It was Andrew's Octy.

And iirc it got around 216 bhp from our remap. Was done 40,000 miles ago so was good to see how it was getting on.

But yes Bill is right ambient temp was high yesterday and even though we have a powerfull fan system it still draws air in from outside.

A note worthy point is our rolling road was seviced and calibrated last month.

Okay....me

'52 Octy 24,000 miles... Revo done after 1000miles at Forge with an SPS 1, Carbonio CAI, Forge DV (put in the RIGHT way round DAVE ! :D )

Reading taken at the DYNO

195.6 bhp @ 5013

225.5 lb ft@ 3010

the torque curve is v. spikey and really starts to drop off after 4000 revs

What you can see with Jane Cs torque curve is how flat it is... the other 'standard' Octys were similar :thumbup::thumbup:

Surprised ?.......Yeah kinda

Was I annoyed ? .... No

P1ssed off ?............No

Reflective ?.............Not really

Did I find the whole day interesting, encouraging and worthwhile ?

I sure did :)

n.b when I can get a scanner, computer with an imaging package and a t'interweb connection together in the same room I will stick the graphs up

Quite happy with mine.

Nice flatish torque curve which is noticable when driven.

Doesn't feel any slower than Manny's car after his has an initial "kick" (lot's of driving other people's cars going on).

Not easy taking a picture of a piece of paper with a digital camera.

Power: 197.0 @ 5846

Torque: 194.6 @ 3319

1523.attach

1524.attach

So my standard REAL RS held up quite well and the figures show it really is standard.

BHP = 192.7 @ 5846

TORQUE = 202.0 @ 3139

:D

PS It's a miracle my OE DV has made a sudden recovery, well maybe not so shocking.

No need to have a go at me, it's not my fault you got pulled up about your DV direction again. ;)

:blush: Ahem... :dunce:

The runs seemed to take a really long time (except for ColinD's which was over before I realised it was the run) but some of the Octy's must have been loaded some

I'd be interested to know what the flow rate of the big ran is though.

Im the first to admit to not understanding modern motors but from what ive just read , please correct me if im wrong, its not really worth the money some of you have spent.

Dave how much has that lot cost you?

I want more power myself and have been taking in/ trying to understand the difference between Jabba/Revo etc and having read the above im more than a little dis-heartened and confussed.

Rather than messing around would it not make more sense to jump in with both feet and go down the IHI turbo route?

Steve :confused:

That's what this thread is about Steve - to discuss the surprising figures!

All told i've spent around 6k on my car, but the really important bits (zorst, induction, TIP, DV + remap) cost about £1400

The way it drives is far more important than the figures and i'm really happy with mine - it absolutely flies and sounds great to boot!

IMHO the IHI kit is a bit overpriced (calling the group buy king!) and if your not sure about your options then I would say it's over the top for a starting point.

Where are you based? There is a mini-meet at Jabba this coming Saturday - why not come along and have a go in a remapped vRS, back to back with yourown and see what a difference that extra 11bhp ;) really makes...

And now you know the reason I don't do RR days.

Yes my car is mapped. I like the way it drives. It is putting out slightly more than standard. Is it 150? 200? 250? Who knows? Who really cares. All I know is, it is quicker than it was and I'm happy with the amount extra I've got (be it 5, 10, 15, 20, 50, 100...bhp more than as standard) for the money I've paid.

Simple innit? :D

And now you know the reason I don't do RR days.

Aye...I share your sentiment on this one Jon....that's why I only had the FWA. ;)

Of course the most important thing is that you're happy with your car. Its not all about figures its about the enjoyment you get from driving it.

However...I some tuners are quoting unrealistic figures for re-mapping then maybe people are not getting the best value for money out of the procedure after all if customer service, price and ease of getting there were all the identicsal surely you'd go to the place that quoted the best figures for the job?
