Please Help, broken sump, garage want to rebuild engine!

Featured Replies

Nice to see you back Ross.

Does that building mean you now have your own place

Oh and how is the golf parked along side it coming on?

Awww shucks thanks Stu ;)

Top end looks to be ok, nothing out of the ordinary. Got to get under it but time during the week is tight and it gets naffin cold up the farm when the sun goes down.

The patient..

Doesnt sound that bad to me, i've heard a lot worse. Odd thing is usually when oil pressure drops the camshaft locks in the head and snaps the cambelt. This is running (and running quite well) so i'm hopefull it can be fixed.

I wasn't sure if i could mention it was yourself doing the works.

I'm happy to see you here also. :)

You have got the right man on the case. I'm sure he'll do a very good job.

Been pondering about a retro-cruise control unit.

I think i will give you a shout once i get my Octty back.

A little update from today, I hope no one minds.

My view at 10.30 this morning..damn chilly

Now the quandry is nothing looks that bad. Everything is worn but nothing scored or out of the ordinary. This means what ever is causing the knocking is deeper in the engine. Given the time that the engine was running with low oil and the noise its making I think rebuilding with new shells and a new oil pump may well be waste of time. It may work but if we spend £300 now and end up no better off I think given time restraints and costing we would be better off trying to find a salvage/recon engine and go from there. Thats just my humble opinion for what its worth.

Nice work fella.

Hmmm, a bit disappointing that theres nothing more conclusive...

I think a new bottom end at least would be sensible just to save hassle if nothing else.

Wow, open heart surgery there. Hope you get it back on the road soon.

Maybe a touch off the wall, and I'm presuming the noise sounds nothing like piston slap:-

Can you get a worn-out oil pump, or run the cam bearings?

I'd refer to Ross for his opinion, but i was thinking the same, it did sound like piston slap when the car was started. Or maybe i was hoping it was piston slap.

But what do i know!

Either way if it was piston slap (rebore/rings/pistons) or cam bearings our solution is going to work out cheaper I am sure. Managed to find a 1.9 ASV engine with half the mileage on it from a newer car for a very good price indeed.

Here we go...

Front off..

Just fitting a new cambelt, tensioner and water pump before it goes back in, very impressed with how it went today, looking good.

Awesome progress for one day mate, excellent stuff! :)

Nice work:thumbup: No messing around at that dealership:rofl: First time ive seen an Octy pulled apart like that, well apart from when Stu got his hands on mine. I only went there for cruise control and he ended up dismantling half the car including my windscreen wipers:rofl:

I'm following the progress with interest.

New engine is now in after having a new cambelt, tensioner and water pump, wired and plumbed up and just a few bits left to do before the front can do go on.

good work Ross

Looking good just a shame the old engine couldn't be cheaply repaired.

Hope that engine didn't come out of a certain silver one having had a full frontal, but that is for obvious reasons.

scary how familiar that engine related work looks to me :o;)

Ross convince you that you fancied a spot of DIY then?

No pictures from this afternoons work, only had a few hours up there but the front is all back on, oil and filter is changed, coolant is in ready to rock in the morning when the battery is charged up.

Fingers crossed.

Ohh fingers crossed and all.:thumbup:

You going to take the old block apart and find out what actually died or just bin it. I'm kind of curious now.

She's back on the road!! :) few things to sort out but the Octy is back!

Has alot more poke than the previous lump, and she did 61MPG all the way back versus 57MPG from the old lump.

EXCELLENT news indeed

Well done Ross, knew you were the man for the job! :)

So whats left to do then? A/C regas I assume, anything else?

Glad your happy Aqib :)

The only thing I couldnt do was regas the ac thats right. Also had a slight issue with the bonnet catch which had seized up which meant the grill suffered a bit of butchery to get the bonnet open again and i lost a large portion of my right index finger, which hurts a lot.

Does drive nice though I must admit, pulled well and no smoke. I was suprised just how quick the engine fired up. I guess as the salvage guys just disconnected the fuel pipes off the filter and plugged them up there was still fuel in the injectors and pump so went straight away.

If Carlsberg did mechanics, they'd be like you!

I've just got to post this to say that I am well and truly impressed. Since becoming a Skoda Octavia owner in December, after years in a kind of motoring wilderness, and discovering this site, I have nothing but admiration for all Briskodians. I have learned more about my car since December than I ever could have hoped. Well done Lummox and congratulations Dragonsunset for getting mobile again. Wow!
