Please Help, broken sump, garage want to rebuild engine!

Featured Replies

Why not ask the dealer how much for a new bottom end of the engine as a whole rather than rebuilding your one.

Probably cheaper.

HI.

SORRY to hear of your engine troubles.

There are 3 different tyoes of engine fitted within the Octavia ATD, BJB and BKC.

If you find out what engine is in your vehicle (it can be found on your log book) and give me a call on 0161 620 1919 between 8am - 6pm I will see if I have got a matching engine.

Most items can be sent sameday for next day delivery.

Kind Regards

Andy

What does your engine sound like? As posted earlier sounds from under the bonnet can be deceptive. Woudn't turbo play up first at mway speeds with its bearings riding on their "film of oil". Take it to your local main dealer unless anyone can recommend different.

I have heard that the oild pressure/warning light usally comes on too late before you can do anything about it.

Someone I know blew the turbo on his 306TD

What if you bought an engine from a car that has been written off/scrapped?

I really want to thank everyone for the advise and offers for help.

The issues I have are, that i no longer trust my current engine, I believe there is damage as to what extent is up to a professional to ascertain.

Secondly I need that professional?

And I'm sure I can source an engine.

But after the responses today I am almost there.

So once again, thanks for the help and advice.

Aqib.

Ive bought odss & sods from these guys & they were very helpful with parts when I needed a new front on my Octy (Wife bumped into someone) They have a section just on Emgines

cars dismantled by skospares.com for all your skospares

Good luck & def worth keeping the car, IMO one of the best Engines VAG made, bit rattly but great performance & Economy

Good luck mate :)

Cracked sump caused by hitting something in the road, what about an insurance claim? Seen it done before for an identical situation. It needs an engine, £2000 seems reasonable from a garage considering all the labour involved in swapping the ancilliaries, renewing the cam belt and water pump. Can't see a short engine as been viable, if the bottom end was oil starved the valve train and camshaft would be as well.

Could you expand on that in layman's terms, I kinda get what your saying?

I will be ringing my insurance company tomorrow!

Thanks.

I got a full quote, sorry its £2,600 including Vat + £280 for replacing my cracked sump. :(

well , if there is very little oil around the bottom (big end) of the engine , there will be even less up top (cam shaft area)

Short engine - block, crank, rods and pistons, for fitment to an available head, valve gear, sump and pumps.

FWIW the TDI 110 in the old Octy MK I is ASV

Two years ago I broke a sump and had to have it alloy welded-cost £60-this was on an Alfa Romeo-then approx two weeks later the car began knocking and was found to have bottom end damage-a minute piece of original broken sump had got around into the bearings and hey ho-end of bottom end.

Due to the speed you may have been travelling at and the loss of oil-you should have a real banging/knocking coming from the bottom end-turn up unannounced and ask to listen to it.

If u need to replace anything then it should only be the bottom of the engine-and go to a salvage breakers for this. Good luck.

Well, maybe. If it was a similar issue to you describe with the Alfa I'd agree. I'm suspicious about overall engine oil starvation, which could easily cause turbo and/or valve gear damage in this case though.

Hey you are right.

On collection there was knocking and the car has been delivered to a highly recommended mechanic.

He confirmed the top end is OK! and will commence the bottom end later on today.

So far so good, all things considered.

That sounds like good news finding someone who'll fix something rather than replace the lot without investigation. Hope it'll be a minor issue.:)

Great news considering - I bought a replacement engine for mine at a cost lower than 2k, but once labour is involved I guess that would get close.

Having an honest and skilled mechanic is deffo worth it here :)

You have got the right man on the case. I'm sure he'll do a very good job.

Awww shucks thanks Stu ;)

Top end looks to be ok, nothing out of the ordinary. Got to get under it but time during the week is tight and it gets naffin cold up the farm when the sun goes down.

The patient..

Doesnt sound that bad to me, i've heard a lot worse. Odd thing is usually when oil pressure drops the camshaft locks in the head and snaps the cambelt. This is running (and running quite well) so i'm hopefull it can be fixed.

Cool! You've got Ross on the job ... problem solved :)

Nice to see you back Ross. :)

Agreed, job well and truly jobbed, and welcome back mate! :D

Nice one. Right man for the job !!
