Please Help, broken sump, garage want to rebuild engine!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I desperately need advise.

I have a Skoda Octavia 1.9TDI estate 110Bhp 2003 @83K miles with FSH. Which I love to bits

I had a crack in my sump (unknown to me) as a result, today the oil all dropped out whilst on the motorway.

I was towed to Rellaince Motors in Slough and I was being charged £260 for sump replacement. I felt great, but now I have been told that the bottom end bearings have gone which means a engine overhaul.

They estimate the costs at £2k

I am mechanically minded but i am not a car mechanic by profession. Can this be correct? Can somebody outline what the process would be?

can anyone advise any other garages or provide information on where i could have my whole engine replaced for less than £2k?

Thanks,

engine damage could possibly have occured if you had run with low oil for some time , especially at motorway speeds , i wouldn't think they would do an engine overhaul , i'm sure it will be easier to source an engine from a breakers , and have that fitted

i would go down to the garage and inspect the engine myself if i were you , they may have just filled the engine with oil , then ran it up , then heard some engine knocking , hence big end damage

thanks for the reply, that's what they are saying after filling with oil they can hear something wrong.

I just don't have the expertise with bottom ends.

It may have caused damage but i would seriously get a second opinon. Get it recovered to a trusted garage 2k is a lot of cash.

Did the engine cut out when it dumped its oil? If so then it could be bottom end, head and turbo damage - in which case its time for a new engine for sure. :(

yes the engine did cut out! but i restarted to pull over so not sure if the damage is fatal.

could you recommend a decent garage near London?

thanks.

Where near London? I had mine done by a mate who runs a garage in Hampton Wick.

I punched a fist sized hole in my sump (it was only an 18m yump  ) Drove it for 1/4 mile and then switched off. Then, as it was so cold, I had to keep starting the engine to keep warm. No harm done, new sump, sealant and the oil - total cost under £200 inc fitting.

I am in fulham but willing to travel for a decent garage.

Thanks.

octy sumps often go.. how long did you run before you stopped after "hole" appeared?

I reckon i was running it for at least 30-40 minutes at low speed,

It was only when i sped up that the engine cutout and then i pullled over and saw oil dripping.

Did you not get a oil pressure warning on the dash ?

tbh i would suspect game over....

the rest of us that "did" sumps were stopped in seconds not minutes...

Quite, If you didn't get this then either that sensor doesn't work or I'd be amazed at the engine being damaged due to a lack of oil.

What other things could rattle, maybe the a/c compressors clutch?

Stay well away. They are the heathrow based company who have a VERY bad reputation for shoddly rebuild engines.

Yep, I understand they retail under a few different brands too - if they are heathrow based, then keep well abreast.

My options are dwindling without a reputable garage.

I dont want to invest money in rip-off merchants rather than an engine.

I really want to keep her, i took me 3 months of looking to find her in the first place.

i got the low oil warning light, is this similiar to oil pressure?

And how long before you stopped was the light on for?

too late to cry over spilt milk now...

why not contact the site sponsors that appear on the banners im sure one of them will be able to assist you.

And how long before you stopped was the light on for?

I dont remmeber but it was intermittent at a guess 5-10 min maybe.

That is not low oil..... it's low oil pressure.

Friendly tip for the future. If the light comes on.... stop immediately until you know the exact reason why it did it.

This is probably why your repair bill may be so high.

£2K is a lot for an inline 4 bottom end. I'm sure you could actually buy a complete replacement engine for that amount and sell off the extraneous bits to recover some costs.

Get over to ukmkivs and SEATCUPRA net too. There "must" be a spanner near you who won't mind doing the work.
