De-chroming with Nitromors...

Featured Replies

I've taken the chrome surround off my Octy to spray it. I've read a lot of threads people have made about doing it and they all seem to say that the chrome doesn't like to come off, no matter how much you rub it with wet and dry. I'm sure I've got a tin of Nitromors knocking around, do you reckon this would shift the chrome, more to the point, will it eat my grill in the process, leaving me with a lump of molten plastic!?

Try submerging it in bleach overnight and the next morning it turns black and flakes off

What sort of bleach are we talking here? I don't really concern myself with houskeeping type stuff....

Regular household, domstos or the likes. Probably get 10 litres of tescos own for under a 5er.

Be carefull you dont buy fertiliser at the same time, they will get suspicious :D

I'll be taking a trip to Tesco tomorrow afternoon then! Thanks for the tip.

Yup i can confirm bleech works a treat chrome turns balck then green

Is that it concentrated or diluted??

Dont have much in the house at the mo. but just added some water to dilute it, will this still work???

Hmm, good question, I'll let you know as I've just bought 8 litres and it's no where near enough! I found the biggest box I could to fit the grill in but it still doesn't lay flat. My 8 litres has filled it up so that it just cover one edge of the grill!! So I'm about to fill it up with some water.

Neat is best, not sure how it will work with water, maybe just take longer.

If you get a good quality PE bag (Like the ones you get with the oven cleaning kits) and put it in that with the bleach youd probably use less.

Mines is outside now in a bucket lol, only covered it half way!! went out and bought 6 litres of thin bleach (32p each :) ) gona swap it round tomorrow, hasn't done anything yet and its been 2 hours :(

Mine is in diluted water and is definatly doing something! It has long stringy black bits coming off it, looks like jizz in the bath, but black!

I've just poked it with a stick and the stringy bits have moved away to revel blackness on the chrome, I can also see bits of chrome floating in the water now. Don't lean over looking in the bucket for too long, that water sure smells funny! :eyecrazy:

That's how mine started, then it went like stringy and misty. I haven't looked at what it's doing recently. It's been soaking since just before 2pm, so nearly 2 hours.

Ahh bummer, you must have stronger stuff than me :thumbdwn:

Mines has been going since around 12 oclock

You really need thick bleech, heres two i am doing atm.

They have been stewing for around 4 weeks now. Its not really doing anything at mo and its just waiting for the bleech being changed when i can be bothered...........plus i am building up courage to go into asda again. I think last time they thought i was well dodgy, infact the woman on the till said......."make sure you open your windows before you use all that" did she think i was going to use 24l all in one go

Hmm, I'll leave mine out overnight, see how it is in the morning. Maybe I'll try a thicker bleach in a sealer bag. At the moment I'm just using some cheap stuff I got from Morrisons... god I hate that shop!

The way I figure though, the bleach cna't be good for the chrome, so even if there is still some left on afterwrads it might rub off easier with wet and dry?

Just taken a quick look at mine, it's not pretty! The grill is pretty much covered in black gunk now. I might rinse it off later and then see if it needs to go back in again.

when I took the badge off my old one a load of chrome came off with it so just used a knife to scrape some off

:rofl::rofl::rofl:pmsl this thread is brilliant,32p bleach,top stuff

How is it going Dan - or have you been arrested :D

Many thanks,

Ahem, it's so much more than that. I bought 4 bottles that were a bit dearer than 32p, mine cost me almost £4....

I've just been out and had another look this morning, it's almost there, just a few bits of stubborn chrome left. I'll take a pic in a bit!

doh,i've done it again,

I MUST NOT POST WHEN DRUNK,I MUST NOT POST WHEN DRUNK..............

don't know what i found so funny last night:rofl:

how many front grills John?;)

Right, as promised here are some pics. I apologise about the quality of the pics but my camera is packed up in a box somewhere so I had to use my phone.

Here is the yummy looking water/bleach combo doing it's business. This makes bubbles and stuff as you look at it for dramatic effect!

I've been poking th grill every now and then with a stick. Not sure why but I feel this will help in the process someway. And remember, rubber up before handling the grill or putting your hand in the bleach.

A little close up action for ya'll. The light areas aren't actually chrome, that's the colour of the plastic. There are a few little bits of chrome that seem to be hanging on in there though. I'll see how it is this afternoon, I might get it out and wash it and dispose of the bleach or possibly refresh the bleach with some thicker stuff.

Thats looking good so far - Keep up with the updates!

Cheers - Rob

Well, I got bored of waiting for it to be finshed in that set up so I have now rinsed it and put it in some fresh, thick bleach in a large sealer bag. See if that get's rid of the stubborn bits any quicker!
