Fabia VRS vs Golf GTI Mk.4 vs Civic Type R

Featured Replies

being in the trade so to speak,i was just saying that there seem to be a lot of ctr's with very similar damage, where faba vrs's are quite a rare thing to find in a breakers yard,i think it may possibly be that the owners of ctr's are going a lot faster when they lose it,all cars have limits,or maybe its simply average ctr owners are much younger than average blue rinse brigade fabia owners, who despite the car being more than capabel of fast speeds, cruise round at 20mph getting under everyone elses feet;)

I wasn't having a go at ctr handling, they are fatastic, and a car i can see myself owning in the future,i was simply making an observation based on my working expierience:D

would be interested to compare sales figs versus write offs

Cheers for that info Stevoraith.

I do agree that your car is more that beating your mates, or whoever else for that matter, but I suppose I was asking mainly because they're all cars I've been considering and performance is an important selling point. The Furby is winning the overaall race by a nose for now!

Thanks for everyone's comments!

Ok, I'm hoping I can provide some facts to go with the argument (mixed in with some opinions of course ;))

To clear up the thing about the kerb weight, VAG figures are for cars carrying three passengers and an 'average load'. Check the brochures if you don't believe this. This means you can compare weights to other VAG vehicles but not necessarily with other manufacturers (who may use empty vehicles etc).

(If you think about it this makes more sense for calculating towing weights anyway as you'll never tow anything with an empty car :D)

Now to performance.

I had a 115PD Golf, remapped to 150bhp. I raced a standard 150bhp petrol Golf GTI down the quarter mile at Crail on 3 runs and beat him by 2-3 tenths each time.

This is a standing start where diesels aren't at their best too.

I own a Fabia vRS and when I had both I found it very difficult to separate them in performance terms.

From this, I'd conclude that the vRS will be marginally faster than a standard petrol GTI. The 180bhp petrol GTI, I'd guess would be similar in performance to the vRS. So little in it that it would be very much down to the driver or who got their foot in first on the way out of a corner.

My best mate also used to have a CTR. I'll state now that I don't like the things. Stupid power delivery and why oh why can't the Japanese design a seat that goes back to the same place when you fold it forward!? :cussing:

Anyway, I digress. We had one particularly spirited drive back from Knockhill one day with me in the Fabia, him in the CTR and my bro in his Civic jordan (160bhp VTi).

The Fabia was quite a good match for the VTi, but there was no way it could keep up with a wrung out type R.

On these back roads where the speed can't get much above 80ish, and you are constantly accelerating between 30 and 70 the Fabia has enough power to keep the CTR working and is quick enough to have a play.

However, you will never beat a CTR in a standard car.

The Fabia was only outgunned by the 160bhp VTi once the speeds got silly high, so maybe in a 175bhp Fabia you might have more of a chance against a CTR but if the road opnes out or the driver is really good, you will lose.

However, the vRS isn't completely embarrased so I'd say it would be very silly to be put off owning one becasue it can't quite match a CTR.

Owning a car is about much more than will it beat my mates off the lights ;)

Why not try a Leon FR TDi PD150? nicer looking than the lot and a bit less hot hatch ??

Good compromise between speed and economy too ;)

If you can afford it. The Toyota Auris is one of the best of the bunch. 174 hp diesel engine. 295 lbs of torque. Decent economy decent price, and looks great!

woohoo!!!

i got moaned at :D

and what exactly is so horrible about my post Andy VRS??? how dare i say something realistic

:rofl::rofl:

Test drove one of these the other day, and it was rubbish!

No heated Mirrors, No Auto Locking, No Selective Locking and silly instruments which, in spite of the manufacture saying that they are easy to read, they are horrible!

And the worst thing - absolutely NO pull between 1000-1600 rpm. The wife hated it too!

Never driven an Auris, or even been in one but I've never heard a single good word said about them by anyone who has (until Snoopie ;))

This is the forum where diesel rules ... .

That's the Massey Ferguson site;)

Anyway.Mk1 Octavia vRS 0-100 16.7s.....(yeah,I know the story:D)

 Don't know which car you drove, but the SR180 has heated mirrors. Auto locking, I'll find out today.

And the best thing about it's pull is, it doesn't stop at 1600rpm :D It actually pulls hard to the redline as standard. More options than the Fabia ... better seats, and a better dashboard in my opinion.

Oh, here you go... :D

Says it all then. ;)

 16.7 seconds. Don't think so some how.

The Octavia vRS MK1, will only ever get to 100 in that time if it's running around 220-230.

;) 'Skoda fools Autocar with sneaky trick'

Actually I can't remember whether the car on test was fiddled with or not? Freakcrabs?

Autocars timing gear is rubbish. 16.7 seconds for a remapped Octavia in the regions of 205 bhp?

Same goes for the CTR. They claimed 15.5 seconds for a 2003 Civic Type-R, (second quicker than what Honda claim), and I also have behind me, 14.7 seconds for the NEW CTR (nearly 4 seconds over Honda's claim). Bunch of jokers them, no wonder their magazine is so cheap. They seem to time everything down a great big hill with a stopwatch in hand...

But they haven't got anything to gain by posting dodgy figures.

Mind you I think they clocked a Fabia 0-60 at something pretty impressive:D

But they haven't got anything to gain by posting dodgy figures.

In that case then, the new 200 bhp slower CTR is a second behind an M3 racing to 100 from 0.

I was just chuffed the vRS was posting times similar to a DB7:D

Yeah, but you need £16k to get in one. Fabia (and most of the others mentioned) can be had for half that so you cant' really compare.

AS i said in my original post, "if you can afford one" ...

Plus, price really isn't an issue, if the person who started the thread is comparing them to a £20,000 + GTI? Or £18,000 Type-R :P;)

the fabia is the slowest and smallest!

We can't all like the same anything :) We've got a Fabia vRS sat on the drive and, no offence to it's owner, but there's no heated front screen, the dash is square and dull, the speedo increments change part way round, I didn't notice there being a button on the dash to open the boot and the seats feel soft/foamy with a covering material that means they'll always look...grubby

love that note in your sig:rofl:

He's not though, he's comparing to a mkIV GTI and EP3 (? is that right? The previous generation anyway!)) Civic, both available for similar money to the Fabia.

Well given the Fabia Sport is £13k when the vRS comes along I'd expect its going to be £1.5-2k more so it will be in the same ball park.

Also interesting point here the Kia Ceed (Golf size) has a 1.6D common rail pushing out 115bhp for a list £14k but you can get them brand new for £11k 7 years bumper to bumper warranty and could easily DMS it.

Just by the pensionermobile. We had one. It's great.
