Torque settings for fitting strut brace

Featured Replies

Hi,

I thought there was a guide for this but the search didnt bring one up (checked 5 pages worth, I may have missed it still).

What is the correct torque setting for retightening the bolts?

Thanks,

WW

Use new bolts.

15Nm + 90'

I think my fitting guide said 25Nm, although it was a long time ago!

Chris

The torque settings are not essential when fitting the Fabia strutbrace as it's connected to the Chassis, not the mounts.

Beg to differ Aaron - the bolts pass through the strut dome and directly into the upper mounting of the strut.

It's why I asked, I remember one of them ceased ;)

Why new bolts though, didnt think we bothered with that ever?

I wouldn't bother with new bolts myself but it's what the book says.

Thread lock on the old ones should do the trick shouldn't it?

25nm I did it to.

Ok pal. Obviously it's wiser if you have the tool and the NM torque settings at hand. ;)

Personally I'd just nip them up hand tight if I didnt have a torque wrench.

Think you can be your own judge as to how tight you do them

 Yep, as they're bolted to the chassis.

This is why, anyone who has fitted a front strut brace that doesn't attatched to the mounts hasn't felt a difference, you wont do.

You seem to be confused -

The SEAT Sport brace that uses the OEM fixings to mount it isn't bolted to the chassis at all.

Simply pass through the chassis (Strut Dome) and into the top mount -

Main reason to not overtighten them is to avoid the fitting working loose in the rubber (/plastic) mount - if it ceases it's a royal PITB to get it out.

FWIW a full list of torque settings are here -

I understand exactly what you're saying Stu, But front shocks are immensly strong, you can even drill the original bolts down with an air gun.

I'm agreeing with you, that... using the torque settings is correct, but not essential.

I couldn't agree mate. I wouldn't want to go anywhere near those bolts with an air gun. Those top mounts are pretty fragile IMHO. I'm not saying that I'm bothered about the correct torque setting or that I would replace the bolts but you do need to exercise caution.

The bolts screw into a metal fixing which is bonded (not very well) into the strut top. The bolts, when fitted, protrude into the wheel arch and are exposed to the elements. If they are rusty or even just dirty underneath then when you try to undo them they are very difficult to get out without causing damage.

I don't agree with an air gun either, just stating that the front shocks are very strong, and can be drilled down with an airgun without damaging the piston in the shock.

A couple of things.....

Firstly for the original poster..... HERE is the guide to fitting the strut brace.

Secondly my Seat strut brace came with fitting instructions in the box that said to tighten the bolts to 25nm rather than 15nm.

Cheers

Dave.
