4x4 Estate TDI: 1.9 or 2.0?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I can't make up my mind which engine I should get! I have test driven the 1.9 and thought it was quite adequate (with 3 people in the car), although I didn't get to test it in all driving conditions, e.g. motorway, steep hilly areas, etc. It certainly didn't feel quick, but I'm not really that bothered about fast acceleration, as long as the engine doesn't feel too weedy for the bulk of the car.

I do a lot of motorway commuting with work (80 miles every other day), I also intend using it for weekend camping trips to North Wales and beyond, where it will be expected to carry 2-4 people with camping and hiking kit (bulky but not heavy... the kit that is, not the people), possibly down singletrack lanes etc where 4WD just might actually become useful.

Anyone care to suggest whether the 1.9 is up to the job I require of it, or should I look at the 2.0?

Also, am I really likely to get 3 mpg more from the 1.9 on the motorway, I usually drive in the 70-80mph region?

Regards,

Richard.

I'm afraid only you can answer your own question. My advice is to test drive both. Try to get an extended test drive of each and drive on a variety of roads with a load in the boot to replicate your camping gear etc.

I have a 4x4 2.0Fsi and have had 44mpg on the motorway although you have to be sensible with the right foot. In town it varies between 28-33 or so althought it seems to have got better with Tesco 99 unleaded which I tried for the first time recently.

Goes like stink too if required :D

I think if you can afford the 2 l TDI then go for that, better to have the capability and not use rather than discovering later that the car you bought isn't up to the task.

The 2 l will also come with the 6 speed box and is a quieter more refined engine.

You could always map the 1.9 to take it up to the 140 bhp from 105 bhp if you find it not powerful enough.

The 2 l will also be more desirable I would imagine when you come to sell it.

I can afford the 2.0 with a push, but I'm not sure I can actually justify a few K just for better acceleration, if the 1.9 is sufficient.

What are the compromises with remapping the 1.9? I imagine there will be lots of threads about this elsewhere? I suppose the fuel economy will be reduced to 2.0 level if I do this?

I hope (famous last words) that if I buy this car then I'll keep it for a long time...!

Hi,

I have the 1.9 and to be honest when cruising the engine noise is not an issue, had a few petrol engines that made more noise.

Did ponder on the 2.0 but the extra purchase cost and lower fuel return was the deciding factor.

Happy as Larry with the 1.9 (fuel return 38-44 mpg)

Alot of people actually find the mpg increases with the map, even with more power you have to be on the gas less I suppose.

With the mapped 1.9 you will pay more insurance and it may null and void your warranty.

I have the 1.9 TDI 105 in my Passat and I thought it was quick enough when I bought it and I came from an Octy I VRS but now I find it a little wheezy on accelleration and I would have liked the 6 speed box as mine has a 5.

The 2 litre is a newer engine and not as noisey and if you find that too slow after a while then you can get that mapped to 170bhp!

The 2 l will also come with the 6 speed box
My 1.9 has the 6 speed box
My 1.9 has the 6 speed box

Skoda and VW must be doing things differently. I shouldn't have assumed and stand corrected.

Isn't your 4x4 the 130 bhp Tdi 1.9? That might explain why you have the 6 speed box as it's the older pd 1.9 rather than the newer 105pd!

No the 1.9tdi is 105bhp with a six speed box

Engine noise is not a concern for me, compared to the car I have now, it's gonna be ok!

I'm more concerned about economy, some of my petrolhead pals have suggested I go for the 2.0 but they are probably more concerned with acceleration than me, 95% of the time I'm a plodder :)

My other concern is that I don't want the engine to feel underpowered. My conclusions from the test-drive were that the engine was definately up to the task, gently accelerating up a moderate hill with 3 adults was good enough for me. However it's now a few days later and I'm starting to doubt the results, did I test it enough, etc...

One guy on one of the Skoda forums reckoned his 1.9 was ok towing a caravan, so I guess I'm worrying about nothing. I suppose it does have 25% more torque than the 2.0 petrol version and 2.0 petrol sounds ample on paper.

You have no issues with motorway travel etc?

if its economy you are after then don't get the 4 x 4 !!!!!!!!!!!!

I want a 4x4, when I say I also want economy, what I mean is I want the best economy I can get whilst driving a 4x4.

It's not really a matter of money, it's more a matter of conscience really. Seeing as I feel I require a 4x4 for my weekend activities (debatable, but I think I have a good case!), I will feel happier if I get a relatively green one. I'm willing to go without the power/acceleration I'm accustomed to in order to have 4WD and moderate economy.

The 1.9 TDI at 47.1mpg is considerably better than RAV4s etc at comparable price, so I'll feel happy about that!

Hi!

I have a 1.9 TDI 4x4 (6 month old), my average is about 6.1l/100km (google says its 38.6 MPG), and take into account that in my commute (daily about 100 km) I have about 1220m of height difference (thats addition of both ways - the morning one is going up 380m and down 840m - average is less than 5l/100km, the other way round its about 7l/100km - can be much less if you drive carefully).

(I'm living on a hill and commuting over another one)

Cheers, Leto

4x4 is always with 6 speed box at least here at Finland.

My farther just got the 4x4 1.9TDI and it's great. 1.9 might be a bit reliable even thats not the problem on 2.0 either. Anyway we get 1.9 since he just liked it more. Old man don't need the power that much.

When did they start putting the 6 speed box in the 1.9? How much difference does it make, a lot of poeple mention it?

I don't think I need the power either, MOST of the time!

Do you know what benefit the 6 speed box offers? This is a general question really!

Well for my mom one gear more to learn to use. She has driven now something like five years with the car with 5 gears and still doesn't use the fifth at all. She is just perfectly happy while driving 100km/h on 4th... =)

Be cause of that we would probably ordered 4x4 with 5 speed box if possible. Or now that she have to start using 5th and 6th this might be what she need.

IMO 1st gear is too slow on 6 speed box and it's useless but thats just me.

I would have thought that a slow 1st gear would actually be a benefit if you happen to go offroad at all though? Like a poor man's low ratio gearbox?

Final drive in the 5 and 6 speed boxes are the same. The 6 speed is used on the 1.9 only on the 4x4, as thats the only box suitable/fit for the 4x4 layout.

Why is 6 speed the only box suitable, I thought the 1.9 was originally sold with the 5 speed box? Is it just a matter of being easier to keep in the powerband with more gears (I suppose the extra weight makes this more critical with the 4x4 version)?

1.9 is available with 5 gear box but 4x4 not.

fitment, nothing to do with powerband etc, it's so they didn't have to develop a 5 speed box to fit the haldex system.

Haldex 4x4 has only ever had a 6 speed box in any of the VAG brands.

Has that always been the case for the current generation 4x4? Are all current 1.9 4x4s (i.e. 2005-) 6 speed?
