Top Gear, Favorit Vs. Lada Vs. Proton

Featured Replies

No I haven't bid, there's one bid from someone else and 32 mins left.

Edit: I'm currently the high bidder, more money wastage :D lol.

Will have to get my scanner drivers installed. I doubt I'll be sued for copyright violation if I accidentally scan and stick it on the net.

lol:rofl:

back when those protons were only a couple of years old,we had one as a duty car ,we all abused it mercilessly, never had a service in 40k,the :rofl:thing never missed abeat.

Sorry but i think your all seriously deluded, even in there day they were all pants

:rolleyes:Me deluded? Nah, I'm stark raving bonkers mate! I love my old cars even though they are pants!

Actually I quite like my pants too, especially the ones that go with my anorak!

I also like modern Skodas a lot, very much indeed actually but my choice is to own, restore and drive the older ones. Nothing wrong with that, nor is your choice wrong either.

Would be better if you could give constructive critisism if you don't like something rather than harsh, sarcy comments that are obviously intended to wind people up. You're making yourself look pants.

Whether the cars are good or bad, they're all better than a walk or 30 minutes soaking up rain waiting for the bus, then getting on the bus and having loud noisy kids playing the latest crap music over their mobile phone speaker

I must admit to having a low opinion of the pre octavia/ fabia skodas when i was zooming around in my vauxhall

then when i bought a skoda,i still had a low opinion of the old school skodas

Now

After visiting this site for a few years

I now have a different opinion of the older skodas

i consider my self briskoda educated/brainwashed:D

any how back on topic, thet REALLY should produce a retro 110R in a similar way which fiat have done with the 500,it would have to be rear engined tho, none of this ford cop out like the fwd fake cr4p RS2000

The new VW Up! platform is RWD so they could do something on that.

There's a mint Favorit not a hundred yards from my house right now. The same family have owned several Favorits during the past few years - all of them in fantastic cosmetic condition. They own them because they choose to - they are Skoda enthusiasts, afterall there are plenty of other cheap motors out there to choose from.

I owned a 120 back in the early 90's and can honestly say it was one of the most entertaining cars I've ever owned - I loved it. I especially loved its eccentricity and the fact it was derided by just about everone else on the road. I guess I enjoyed being a non-conformist, it said somthing about my personality, and that is one of the elements that has led me to owning a Skoda today. I actually feel a little cheated now that Skoda have become mainstream and the Fabia is really just another eurobox clone - the badge just doesn't create a reaction any more - I doubt my next modern car will be a Skoda, what's the point?

I used to work in a Lada/Proton dealership many moons ago.

The Lada's were basically, very basic, they got you from A to B, and never broke down, the Riva's being RWD were a right laugh, despite such a puny engine you could have some brilliant sideways action in the wet, and at such a low speed it didn't matter if you lost it as you'd be unlikely to hit anything!

The Protons were actually quite nice to drive, all Mitsubishi mechanicals meant they were reliable, and pretty quick for what they were, especially the triple valve, boy could that take some abuse, they just looked crap, and in common with the Lada's, they smelt horrible when new, so we had to add artificial 'new car' scent into them when PDI'ing them!!

As far as I can recall I dont think I've ever been in a Favorite or Felicia, I expect I have but cant remember it.

Top Gear - December 1993 - ontest - Skoda Favorit GLXi, Lada Samara 1.5GL, Proton 1.3GE

There's the article :D Positive for the Favorit, quite surprisingly very negative for the Proton but it seems it's more the price/quality issue they're not happy with. So surprisingly the Lada isn't last. Notably they inserted the incorrect picture for the Skoda interior, putting the Lada one in it's place.

Interesting article, especially looking back and some of the comments made.

I had a blue one just like that, and it was K reg!! Shame they haven't got an interior pic of the Favorit :(

I had a red 136LS in faded maroon which died of HG failure, shame really, was really nice with brown interior, carbs etc. Then I had the blue one (GLXI) which I wrote off by nudging a kerb at 10mph!! Dad had a green Flairline hatch GLXiE which was fully loaded (PMSL), did over 130k with no dramas. Then I had a similar Flairline which I sold at 90k. I had a blackline hatch which I flogged as it leaked all the time into the cabin...

Still got a softspot for them.

Had a 1.6GLXi Felicia in white too, really wish I hadn't smashed it up as it looked stunning and was superb throughout... :(

Then I had a black Fabia vRS, and now I'm pining after something else with a Skoda badge. :)

Thats a really good article

TBH I'm not surprised the Proton got low marks. Talk about sparse equipment it didn't even have a passenger mirror!!! and it was the most expensive.

Not surprising the Skoda got a big  and they weren't wrong about the future for Skoda. Next came the Felicia which shared VW powerplants then the Octavia/Fabia etc which also shared platforms

.

lol i remember the no nearside mirror:rofl:the proton was aweful, and just wouldn't die:D

The Favorit GLXi won the test - I've got a copy already!! Jeremy Clarkson loved the Favorit, stating it was more fun than cars costing 3 times as much.I had a few Favorits, the last being a 1995 GLXie Flairline and it was brilliant.Skodas always were better than Lada or Proton or Hyundai et al.Now they are better than the company that own them.Just look at Auto Express & Top Gear ownership surveys.

As for Top Gear - that show finished as a motoring show ages ago. I remember when they reviewed and drove actual cars people bought.

The car I have has been reviewed on Top Gear and that wasn't that long ago. :D:cool:

There used to be a company in Hull that bought Lada's and shipped them back to Russia:thumbup:

My Dad had a proton MPi , they are basically a 1980s Mitsubishi Lancer built under licence in Malaysia and fitted with the 12v Mitsubishi engines. I think the body would fall to bits before the engine died , the mechanicals of those things were typically japanese in their reliability. I havent saw one for a while now though , and Ive saw even fewer Ladas (the last ones I saw were being loaded onto a Russian ship in Tweedmouth dock , about 5 years ago!) I still see a fair few Favorits though , most of them late models and the majority being top spec and/or estates.

Seen about 2/3 Proton MPIs in the past few weeks.

They are rare round these parts.

Seen a fair few Favorits though.

:) I MOT'd a J reg Proton yesterday. It was a battered, knackered looking old banger but it sailed through the test with no advisaries. There was no rot, had never been welded and the drivetrain had no leaks. It's not a car I would want personally, but it certainly impressed me.

Favorit's are good cars, and certainly turned peoples opinion around about skoda's. We have had three in our family, one of the first in 1990 - G Reg, in beige, and then a k reg in red, and then an M reg LXiE Flaireline which went onto 141K! Both my sister and I used it.

I am a big Skoda fan, especially the older ones, no one ever gave them the credit they were due. People say today Skoda's are a good car etc, most of them are VW's underneath!

Since the Favorit, I have had three Felicias, 1.3, and two 1.6's (VW engines) and must admit the 1.6's haven't been as good as the 1.3's were. They are also more expensive parts wise!

None of this bothers me at all, as I still enjoy driving them a lot - and plan on getitng an Octavia in the future.

Just on the topic of Lada's, almost all of them over here died of rust after 10 or so years, (sometimes a lot less!) I think the Russians were having a laugh or something at our expense, as I've travelled in Russia lately, and there are 20 year old Rivas everywhere in great condition and original paint, they are absolutely filled to the brim with cavity wax from new for the russian market (there roads are unbeleivably bad, and weather is appalling!) I suspect they didn't bother rustproofing the exports thinking our roads were better and didn't need to and hence the rust.

Also, a 10 year old Lada in russia still costs around 50% of its new cost!!!
