black magic paint chip

Featured Replies

Got a 7mm x 2 mm chip in the front bonnet after driving to brum yesterday, its taken off the paint and primer and is about 1mm deep. any advice on filling this in? dont really want to have to go to a skoda dealer for the paint pen. can i get this from vw garage and if so has anyone got an order code for it?

Halfrauds sell a black magic paint pen/mini brush 3 pen kit

Skoda black magic (pearlescent)

I think it costs about £10 ish

I used a Halfrauds BM kit to fill in a horrendous stone chip on my bonnet, overfilled it and polished it flush, works a treat and is barely noticeable thanks to all the other stone chips

The halfrauds BM kit is a necessaary thing when you have a colour coded front grille:D

whats a BM kit?

Bondage, masochist??

I may be able to help you out at newbury on Friday with a black magic touch up paint if you want one.

not sure if im going yet as minitext will be with me and she doesnt like drives more than ten minutes :( but i will see what i can do, thanks!!

chip pen shouldnt cost much from skoda. my mexus one cost me 6quid and that was from the lexus dealer. they are all money grabbers

The Halfords set has primer, BM paint, lacquer and 2 little abrasive pad thingies in a little plastic box.

Not bad value IMO.

cheers i will try and have a look on friday if not ill try and get over to newbury and meet up with you roo!!!

no worries if not

To be fair to my local dealer, they gave me one for nothing when I enquired about it on the day I collected the car!

Got a similar chip on my bonnet but reluctant to have a go with the paint pen(s) due to bitter previous experience.

I used the proper Skoda one (a tenner i think) its bound to be a better match than Halfrauds, you get the paint and laquer, no primer though

i did mine at the weekend with the halfrauds one, slightly bodge the cleaning bit, didnt realise the tool was so abrasive. carefully did a coat of primer then 2 coats of the black magic and later a coat of laquar, its virtually unnoticable, but will need a rub over with resin to slightly flatten it, but apart from that it looks better than a gapping stone chip.

Used the Halfords kits a few times (and even the mix 'n' match pain service) and the colour is spot on each time.

The easiest way to fill in a stone chip is to pour a little of the paint into something like an aerosol lid and use a cotton bud to apply a small amount at a time to the car. That way you can fill the chip, without overfilling and needing to polish it back. I've never had that much luck with the brushes and found that they put too much paint on the car.

When the pro's do it, they apparently have a syringe type dropper which allows them to finely control the amount of paint, but I've not been able to find anything aftermarket to do a similar job :(

i think for someone like me who dont do this every day ive done a good job. my last car looked a mess when i did it.

A guy at a bodyshop showed me a trick if you have some paint for your car (i.e. left over after a repair) mix a small amount with equal parts of clear lacquer and apply using an artists paint brush from a hobby store. Once it is dry you can gently flat it with a very fine emery cloth 1200s or 2000 grade to create an invisible scratch repair. Polish once complete. (the emery cloth stage can be omitted if not confident)

£5.10 (+vat) for the Race Blue touch-up pots from the dealer. Not bad really.
