Are bulb upgrades worth it?

Featured Replies

I'd like to purchase a set of spare bulbs and note that http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk have a rather nice wizard to take you through it.

My question is, though, are the upgrades worth the money? I actually hate being blinded by oncoming traffic with super-duper bright bulbs but do they actually last a lot longer too?

Seems a bit hypocritical to be blinded then buy they bulbs myself!

Yes upgrade bulbs are worth it, they are like night and day if you pardon the pun.You will be better getting them from powerbulbs.com and remember to get your discount(see the freedom section)

I have upgraded all my bulbs. I have Philips BlueVision sidelight bulbs (which are a huge improvement - give a nice white look, making me more visible to other road users), Philips Xtreme dipped bulbs (which are a bit of a waste of time, I think, as most of the time you have your dipped lights on, you're in an area with streetlighting anyway), and Osram Nightreakers on the main beams, which are exceptional.

So, to sum up, I personally think it's worth upgrading 2 out of the 3 bulbs.

Actually dipped lights of good quality imho are very useful, as having full beam on isnt generally possible (too much oncoming traffic for example, or car nearish in front), so having great beam output there is worth it too ;)

IMHO it is a great investment in safety, see and be seen and all that, plus if you go through the effort of changing the bulbs, might as well do the lot :)

So, is the Nightbreaker H3 the no. 1 choice for night driving on country roads? Can you fit them easily?

I believe it is the best, that's why I went for it. Relatively easy to fit, though small hands are an advantage (especially on the vRS, I believe). And as WW says, in for a penny, in for a pound - might as well splash out and do the lot. Some sites do free sidelight bulbs with purchases over £20 too, so do it as 2 separate transaction and get two sets - then you can use one set to upgrade your interior map reading lights.

Oh good tip that last one mate (ie the separate purchase) - just watch the delivery is free in that case though, but not a bad idea at all :D

Yeah, just checked and Powerbulbs are offering Philips Bluevision sidelight bulbs for purchases over £10, and postage is free, so if you get a set of H3s and a set of H8s in 2 transactions, you'll get 2 sets of Bluevision sidelights.

To throw a spanner in the works, I've used 100W main beam bulbs in my last two cars as they offered much better range and illumination than the 55W bulbs. I've opted for the Philips Rallye ones and have not encountered any problems in the 80k miles I've been using them for and they get used a lot in the winter months.

For dipped beam, I opted for the Philips Xtreme +80% bulbs. I came to them from Osram Silverstars (which are excellent) but the Xtremes are noticeably better, especially in the spread of light as well as the clarity of the light. As WW says, you want as much light as possible if there's oncoming traffic and the Xtremes do just that :D

osram night breakers have won some of the awards in car mags at the moment, ive got osram silverstars and there a double thumbs up, on dip there so much better than stock bulbs

I am dreading to spend much cash on bulbs at the moment as the xenons will be re-united with the car I'm driving at some stage in the future.

That said I must really fit the uprated dipped beam bulbs soon, cant see a darn thing once there is a bit of dirt buildup, which with the amount of cr*p on the roads at the moment is within a single journey annoyingly :(

Just upgraded mine at the weekend ,fitted osram silverstar dipped, the free phillips blue sides and silver vision indicator bulbs front and back. i would say well worth it over standard bulbs in looks and performance ded easy to fit ,get some:thumbup:

Fitted Osram Nightbreakers to my vrs yesterday.

They are a lot brighter and look very white too.

Big improvement over OEM.

Paid £17.97 from powerbulbs ebay shop with free delivery.

Got a set of osram blue (Actually look bright white!) sidelight bulbs to match for £3.97 off fleabay too.

Definately worth upgrading.

Is there a voucher discount?

ZXRCX111 is a code for 10% off, for non-Freedom member.

Just bought Osram Nightbreaker H7 and the free pair of Blue Vision W5W with the 10% discount for £18.68 with the free delivery. Glad I read this thread, thanks chaps.

Due to this thread I've just spent just over 30 quid and got a set of Osram nightbreaker H7's and H1"s. Done the purchase in two separate transactions as per above post and got two sets of ble w5w sidelight bulbs too....bonus.

It's acually a huge saving when considering the w5w bulds are a tenner a set, plus the 20% discount powerbulbs are doing on the nightbreakers plus the code in the above code also giving a further discount.

at a quicj estimate it's nearly 80 quid worth of bulbs for just over 30 quid inc postage....looking forward to getting them all in now.

I'll do a whole side then compare the difference with a piccy then finish it off.

Andy tfsi send me a thanks then, Ive just saved you some cash!!!;)

Yeah! according to me bulbs upgrades are worth it?

Hi

olly- Cheers for the code saved me a couple of quid. Now have Osrams on their way for dipped and main neams with 2 sets of free sidelights (one for the outside and one set for interior).

Cheers again
