TPS - How Random

Featured Replies

How does this actually work, does it just go off when it feels lonely? :)

My tyres are all up to pressure but still, it occasionally goes off randomly.

Cheers

conversely, mine have been down quite a bit in the past and it hasn't gone off... :-(

I don't have much success with it.

The only time mine went off was when I changed wheels over ( rotating tyres ). Until I experience a puncture I don't know how good it really is.

How does this actually work,

The system works using the ABS sensors to measure the rotational difference between the wheels, any changes should trigger the system.

I assume that you are "setting" the system?

IE, check and adjust cold tyre pressures and then pressing the TPM button until there is a beep?

AFAIK the system wont detect a drop in pressure if it happens over time on both tyres on the axle, just if there is a sudden difference on that axle.

The system works using the ABS sensors to measure the rotational difference between the wheels, any changes should trigger the system.

.... this means that it will only show up a difference in pressure of one tyre vs. the other three i.e. when you have a puncture. It won't show the, natural, variation of all four tyres cause by atmospheric temperature/pressure or geneal seepage of air.

My advice [for what it may be worth]; get a reliable tyre pressure gauge for about £20 and check your pressures once a week; also (when being fitted) get them inflated with nitrogen, which reduces the general seepage of pressure over time (compared to compressed air) and gives less fluctuation in pressure with temperature.

Don't know if this applies to the Skoda system or not, but on Aston Martin's with TPM the car has to be taught to recognise each wheel on each corner of the car (it only involves pressing buttons on the unit in sequence on a start-up). If this is not done or if the wheels are swopped and not re-taught the system doesn't work

Seeing as you have to set it if you adjust the tyre pressures I assume it takes this setting and monitors variations for it. It does take a while for it to go off I reakon. After my tyres were changed it went off, after about 5 miles driving. Pressures were different to what I would use.
