Budget - Car tax increases?

Featured Replies

Anyone know if it's suspected that car-tax will go up in the budget?

If it's suspected I might get my car tax 3 weeks early online as I've had the reminder through just now. :)

You cannot get it three weeks before, only 15 days

It's the 4x4's that's going to cop for it so they have said

Hmm, seems online I can do it now?

Go for it you can't loose

Expect a £5 rise on low end cars , and a big rise on the top two groups.

I predict the planned 2p rise in fuel duty will be shelved though.

Cant see the 2p rise on fuel not being implemented - government have already earmarked the extra cash it will generate and cannot cover the shortfall it will create if they dont enforce it, but really hope they dont.

Gas guzzlers and 4x4's will be clobbered the most on road tax.

What interests me is whether the government will increase the inland revenue fuel rates to reflect the huge increase in the cost of fuel over the last six months.

Currently set at 40p per mile for first 10,000 business miles and then 25p per mile for over 10,000 miles.

This was set at least 3 years ago, so needs updating. Bet they dont touch it!!!

It's quite simple.

There are two components of tax on fuel.

The fuel duty is a fixed figure in pence per litre , but there's also the VAT element which is a percentage of the selling price so if fuel gets more expensive they receive extra revenue there.

Just before the last 2p rise in duty , diesel was typically 93.9p and now it's typically 109.9p

Of that 16p rise , 13.4p goes to the oil companies , and the government gets an extra 2.6p in VAT. That more than covers the planned 2p rise so they can afford to scrap it without losing out and it gives them a chance to appear to be doing the right thing for motorists.

Like I say , I could be wrong , but I doubt it

That £5 would sooner be in my pocket for an extra 3 weeks. :D

But think I will take the chance it will go up, and do it tomorrow night. Last time I was £5 worse off thanks to hanging on.

Well we know band G goes up to £400 but I think the lower ones will rise £5 at the low level, 10 in the middle bands and 15-20 in the E-F bands - a good 10% across the board.

This £2000 showroom tax is just think-tank kite-flying to see what the shysters can get away with next. Can you imagine the car manufacturers response if this was introduced across the board? If something is introduced, it'll be at a much lower level and we'll all be so relieved we'll forget to get angered by yet another tax.

As for the 40p per mile fiscal drag (6 years old isn't it?) we've got 2 hopes and Bob is already dead :(

see my sig.

Online is different tho', done mine today.

Yep, band G.. ie most cars with "decent" performance will go up to £400.

So anything with more than 230bhp (standard before anyone says owt) really :thumbdwn:

This is one of the things that put me off the Mazda 3 MPS

There are a few 230+bhp cars that sit in band F... they're not cheap ones mind... :(

Don't know if they'll risk putting up band F too much. There are a lot of pretty ordinary cars in there. Still I wouldn't be shocked at a £50 rise.

I didn't think he'd risk putting the 2p duty increase on but the closer it gets the more likely I think it is. They need the money badly.

I doubt fiscal drag will be alleviated on anything.

4x4's punished.

I wish people would forget the 4x4 argument and remember certain Volvo estates,Renault Espaces etc are all doomed too.

I really think this government is scoring too many own goals

But if you have done it today you have just lost a months tax, don't know how much you pay but I would guess 1/12 is more than a £5

If you do it before the 15 days, you loose a month !!

When you fill the form out online it goes from when the old tax disc runs out - the end of this month.

Are you sure?

When I last tried it, it showed the month before !

I'm doing it in a few minutes so will let you know. :)

Positive, i put the reg No. in, it said the tax was due on 1/4/08 then let me renew the disc.

I was also surprised as i am aware of the 15th day rule.

Use the reference number on your V11 reminder or Registration Certificate to renew your tax from the 15th day of the month in which the tax disc expires. The tax disc can only be sent to the address shown on your V11 reminder or Registration Certificate

Coppied from the DVLA web site

Hi Gizmo,

What month did it say on the picture of the disc?

When I tried it, it came up with the month before, so I cancelled the transaction, and did it after the 15days.

Damnit! Just did it online and they said I had no MOT!

Have it in front of me and it expires 28th of this month.

The helpline for the database doesn't open until 7.30, so I'm going to have to try and do it first thing in the morning before I leave for work. :grumpy:

It definitely said license start date 01/04/08 though.

You will have to get a MOT first, they won't let you even get it at the post office with out a new one!
