Budget - Car tax increases?

You will have to get a MOT first, they won't let you even get it at the post office with out a new one!

Ummm, I do have it ;) It expires in about 2 and a half weeks time, so the database must never have been updated when I had it done late last March. :(

That's an interesting point - I assumed that you had to present an MOT with at least a month to run when you got the car taxed, but I have no idea where I got that from :o

Chris

Ive just renewed my Tax anyway.. i have to say that the online tax disc thing is possibly *the* best thing the gov have ever done :D

Yeah - best thing when the MOT database is up to date. I actually did my MOT on 02/03/07, post dated to 28/03/07. I'm willing to bet the database had 02/03/07 put in the expiry.

MOT has to be at least dated from when the new tax starts. You will need a new MOT before you can renew.

I can't wait to see what my tax goes to.

Band 'F' - Think it was £215 a year last time.

Oh well.

Half a penny per litre, he postponed the 2p rise, thanks

For environmental reasons as well!

I told you that would happen.

It was just reported on the news that since Labour took over in 1997 they have raised duty by 25% , which is less than inflation. Before you slate them too much , compare that to what the Conservatives would have done

I'm really not sure what is happening with this half penny - sloppy reporting on the bbc. I don't think there's any increase for six months and in 2010 the 2p increments will become 2.5p increments but I could be wrong.

Strange looking 25% Fuel Tax - PetrolPrices.com unless of course the previous governement sneaked in an 8p per litre raise in early 1997.

old but interesting figures: BBC NEWS | VOTE2001 | FACTS | Fuel tax in the UK

That graph shows that in 1997 , fuel cost 61p including 9p vat and 40p duty.

Fuel duty is now 50p , so a 25% rise

So what do the Road tax increases mean for vRS and 4x4 drivers. 4x4 (Group D tax) is highly likely as next car. Any effect on it from the Budget?

It's not clear at all. More here

To start out I thought there was no change to band F but new higher bands were being created.

the link above read like band F could go to £310

THIS IS MAJOR!!!!!

high emitting cars from before 26 mar 06 that previously escaped band G will now get taxed to **** from 2009. Only pre 2001 cars will be safe. the table also includesdetails of the "showroom" tax. Page 122 of the budget report.

next year the car tax on my gas guzzling  1.6 family hatchback (162gCO2/km) goes from £145 to £175. who needs 2p on fuel when you do it through the back door?

Dr. Z

By my reckoning, fuel duty in early 1997 was about 36p per litre, its now 50.35p for ultra low sulphur fuel - ergo a 40% rise, not 25% although I'm struggling to find the exact figures and have based that info on an IFS graph. Before abolishing the fuel escalator in 2000, our good c-c-c-comrade Gord(enr)on Brown got his retaliation in first by raising the increase above inflation which, incidentally, must have contributed to fuel crisis in 2000 or whenever it was. And lest we forget the current all time high oil prices, that have increased the cost of petrol 20% in the past year alone, on which the government adds a healthy 17.5%

And aside from fuel duty, tell me, how much tax revenue does the incumbent government take in relation to GDP? Is that more or less than it was 10 yeas ago? I've seen economics described as a carrot and stick relationship. Unfortunately, New Labour apologists don't realise that the current UK economic relationship for ordinary people relates more to a big ******* stick and an even ******* bigger stick.

As just confirmed, I needed MOT on 01/04/08 to be able to use the online service. Oh well, will get it done before the new nozzles go in. ;)

So what actually happened to the band charges? Has the £115 gone up or not? I'm none the wiser scouring the BBC budget report.

bbc is ********, see my attachment, its gone up £5 this year and who knows what next year

Well according to my last V11, my Furby coughs out 143 CO2.

So 2007-08 was £115.00

DVLA/ Direct Gov confirms 2008-09 will be £120.00

Then your attachment seems to put my car into the 141-150 group, so I'm reading it as:

2009-10 will be £120

2010-11 will be £125

I don't have any issue with that :D

I'm looking at a £200 increase next year ... my Signum (2004MY) puts out an ozone friendly 242g/Km. Never mind, eh? Keep on voting labour

so am i reading this right, mine has gone from 165 to 170 this year to 260 the year after? in which case shouldnt they look at reducing petrol duty as its a sneaky way to add on the 2p duty?

I think mine goes down a tad on this years, but will go back to what it was last year??? I think. 138g/km

You got it. For your 181grams you go up from £170 to £260 as you're 1g over that threshold. 180 and it would be £205 next year. How daft is that?

From tomorrow by the looks of it. :thumbdwn:

Of course all those diesel owners who excrete little more than a puff of CO2 and the smell of roses will continue to cheaply kill all our children
